About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Unit Assistant to join our team at Northeast Georgia Health System, Inc. As a Unit Assistant, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and support to our patients and families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Obtain and report basic patient physiological data, such as vital signs, weight, skin condition, color and character of urine and stool.
  • Utilize proper body mechanics, provide for positioning, mobility, hygiene, ADL, and/or comfort needs according to procedure and direction.
  • Monitor fluids intake and output and document.
  • Promptly identify and report physical and mental status changes to licensed staff assigned to the patient.
  • Organize patient care and set appropriate priorities by implementing physician and nursing orders within prescribed time frames.
  • Perform therapeutic procedures within the parameters of the job description; reporting patient's response to supervising nurse.
  • Make frequent rounds to patient's room in addition to responding without prompting to patient call lights, instituting appropriate actions.
  • Explain procedure or care to be provided to patient prior to start of procedure such as mobilizing patient.
  • Accurately and timely record patient data and forward to supervisory staff within established time frames.
  • Promptly answer patient intercom and respond by directing patient's request to appropriate staff, filling requests as defined by Unit routine, and following up with patient/family to be sure request was completed.
  • Make necessary diet requests and/or notify the Dietary Department of changes.
  • Perform emergency procedures (i.e. CODE, fire, or disaster codes) according to policy.
  • Print Ticket to Ride for transports.
  • Enter the time of patient discharge in the Electronic Medical Record.
  • Ensure completeness of D/C'd patient chart before sending to Medical Records.
  • Contribute to patient safety by utilizing Universal Precautions for all patients, careful adherence to NGHS Hand Hygiene policy, providing a safe patient environment, obtaining and restocking isolation supplies for patients in Infection Precautions, completing and documenting equipment cleaning responsibilities as well as maintaining properly functioning equipment.
  • Place supplies from storeroom in designated areas, as appropriate.
  • Notify appropriate departments of needed repairs and follow through on requests.
  • Distribute linen and ice to patient as needed in addition to frequently offering refreshments as patient's diet permits.
  • Perform patient transport functions as needed by the unit.
  • Prepare room for new admissions, ensuring PPE on the back of the door, bed is turned down, and any appropriate supplies or equipment is available for the incoming patient.
  • Orient patient/family/significant other to unit & room, greeting patient & family in a positive pleasant manner with each encounter.
  • Answer the telephone in a polite and courteous manner, screening and referring all calls appropriately to ensure accurate communication.
  • Place reports (i.e. x-ray, etc.) in patient's chart or insure reports are sent to appropriate units.
  • Maintain patient's chart by thinning charts as needed, replenishing forms as needed, and placing reports on appropriate chart location.
  • Make recommendations to unit Director for purchase of new equipment or supplies as appropriate.
  • Complete daily/weekly requisitions to accurately reflect the unit's needs.
  • Record refrigerator temperature daily on appropriate sheet.
  • Maintain printers by changing ribbons, replenishing paper, and reporting problems to information systems.
  • Replace telemetry batteries according to unit.
  • Replace glove boxes and wipes in patient rooms when supply is low.
  • Participate in staff meeting with no more than two absences.
  • Read and respond to e-mails in timely manner.
  • Exhibit flexibility in scheduling to meet department staffing needs.
  • Complete unit specific and annual competency assessment requirements within specific timelines.
Requirements
  • Licensure or other certifications: Current Georgia Certified Nursing Assistant or successful completion of Fundamentals of Nursing Course if a nursing student.
  • Educational Requirements: Reading, writing, and math skills at a 10th grade completion level or higher as evidenced by a High School Diploma, GED, or high school transcript showing completion of at least the sophomore level of high school.
  • Minimum Experience: No previous experience is required, on-the-job training in practices and procedures of the hospital and medical terminology is provided. Previous experience as a nursing assistant or unit aide is desirable.
