POSITION OVERVIEW


The individual in this role will be accountable for ensuring the safety of educational facilities, safeguarding students and staff, and aiding in the maintenance of order within the school environment.

Responsibilities include monitoring school premises, surrounding areas, and events to address any issues promptly. Unlike a traditional guard, the Safety and Security Coordinator will possess the authority to make arrests. This position will involve wearing a semi-uniform and a pocket emblem for identification rather than a shield. Note that Security Coordinators will not be armed or trained in the use of firearms.

Good judgment and a high level of tact are essential when interacting with students.

Direct supervision will be provided by the Director of Security.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Maintain order in and around educational facilities, including restrooms and cafeterias;
2. Report irregularities to the School Principal and/or Director of Security;
3. Disperse groups of individuals congregating on school property;
4. Assist the principal with the orderly movement of students within the building;
5. Remove unauthorized visitors from school premises;
6. Aid in the apprehension of individuals violating laws or school regulations on school property;
7. May seize and secure illegal or unauthorized items brought into the building;
8. Assist in identifying potential issues through effective communication with students, community members, and local businesses;
9. Keep the principal informed about effective security measures for the building;
10. Develop strategies to prevent unauthorized access by outside groups;
11. Attempt to resolve minor misconduct without resorting to arrest;
12. Investigate incidents within the school and submit reports to the School Principal, Director of Security, and law enforcement as necessary;
13. May be required to testify in disciplinary hearings;
14. May need to operate a department vehicle for transporting officials to meetings or school events;
15. Perform related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1. Familiarity with investigative techniques;
2. Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain a positive attitude when dealing with the public and ensuring student safety;
3. Proficiency in preparing, understanding, and interpreting written materials;
4. Ability to think clearly and make informed decisions;
5. Strong communication skills to present ideas effectively;
6. Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with others;
7. Attributes such as tact, courtesy, physical strength, and agility;
8. Physical fitness appropriate for the demands of the role.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent, along with six months of full-time experience as a security guard;
OR
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent supplemented by 15 credit hours from an accredited institution in Criminal Justice, Police Science, or Law Enforcement (transcripts must be provided upon application).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS


Applicants must possess a valid driver's license and a Security Guard Registration Card, both of which must be presented at the time of appointment and maintained throughout employment.


Upon appointment, candidates will be required to complete a 16-hour on-the-job training course as mandated by relevant regulations.


Employees must also participate in an 8-hour Annual In-Service Training Course and maintain a valid Security Guard Registration Card during their tenure with Buffalo Public Schools.


NOTE:
Part-time experience will be pro-rated to meet full-time experience requirements. Proof of education must be provided at the time of appointment.
