Journeyman Electrician

Job Overview

Position Summary: The City of Somerville is seeking a proficient Electrician to perform advanced electrical tasks at the journeyman level. This role involves the installation, testing, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems, circuits, fixtures, appliances, and equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Execute troubleshooting and repairs on faulty electrical wiring and defective equipment, including motors, generators, transformers, and switches.
• Conduct inspections and tests on circuits and fixtures to identify issues such as broken wires, loose connections, and blown fuses.
• Utilize a variety of hand tools and electrical testing equipment, including voltmeters and multimeters, to ensure proper functionality.
• Oversee and guide helpers and apprentices in their tasks.
• Perform additional duties as required by the department.

Qualifications:

• Comprehensive knowledge of electrical trade practices and safety regulations.
• Ability to produce clear oral and written reports regarding work performed.
• Possession of a valid Massachusetts Journeyman's License.
• Valid Massachusetts Class D driver's license is required.

Work Environment:

This position is primarily indoors but may involve outdoor work under varying environmental conditions. The role may require physical agility and strength, including navigating construction sites and lifting heavy materials.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

The demands of this position include:

• Frequent bending, crawling, and moving about in various environments.
• Working in confined spaces and under challenging lighting conditions.
• Occasional lifting of items weighing up to 50 pounds or more.

Skills:

Essential skills include effective communication, problem-solving, and the ability to work under pressure while managing multiple tasks.

Visual and Motor Skills:

Specific vision abilities required include close and distance vision, color perception, and depth perception. Employees must also demonstrate proficiency in using safety equipment to prevent injuries.

Compensation and Benefits:

Hours: Full-Time (temporary role)
Salary: $1,153.28 weekly plus artisan pay and benefits
Union: SMEA B
FLSA: Non-Exempt
