Job Description

At Estes Express, we are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Yard Jockey to join our team. As a Yard Jockey, you will be responsible for safely handling and maneuvering tractor/trailers and other large equipment to facilitate the loading and unloading operations in the yard.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Safely Handle and Maneuver Equipment: Safely handle and maneuver tractor/trailers and other large equipment to facilitate the loading and unloading operations in the yard.
  • Perform Pre-Shift and Post-Shift Inspections: Perform pre-shift and post-shift inspections of the yard and dock equipment to ensure everything is in good working condition.
  • Load and Unload Freight: Properly cube, load and unload freight using a forklift, pallet jack, hand truck or by hand.
  • Prevent Damage and Shifting: Properly load freight to prevent damage and shifting in transit by blocking and bracing and through the use of load bars, straps, dunnage and air bags.
  • Set Up and Break Down Trailers: Accurately set up, break down and hook trailers safely.
  • Monitor Yard Conditions: Monitor the yard for unsafe drivers and non-employees; notify management.
  • Work in Outdoor Weather Conditions: Work in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Perform Dockworker Duties: Perform all duties of dockworker as requested.
  • Communicate Effectively: Communicate effectively with Dock supervision, Line Haul drivers and Fleet Services personnel.
Qualifications:
  • Education: High School Diploma or General Educational Degree (GED), or any combination of education and experience, which would provide an equivalent background.
  • Age: 18+ years of age.
  • CDL and MVR: A valid CDL and acceptable MVR are required if driving on public roads.
  • FMCSA Registration: If a CDL holder, must be registered with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
  • Experience: Experience in the transportation industry a plus although not required.
  • Stable Work History: Stable work history.
  • Physical Abilities: Ability to operate forklift (7500 lb. vehicle), push or pull loaded pallet jack and/or hand truck with a minimum load of 70lbs, and perform physical activities such as standing, lifting, twisting, turning, climbing a ladder, etc.
  • Ability to Work in a Team Environment: Ability to work independently, or in a team setting.
  • Ability to Work Under Pressure: Ability to work under tight time constraints in a high volume environment with multiple priorities.

The employee is frequently required to sit and climb or balance.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to work near moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles.
