Role Overview :
We are seeking a dedicated Neuroscience Behavioral Research Technician to join our team. This position is integral to the NIA IRP Laboratory of Neuroscience, specifically within the Neurocognitive Aging Section. Our laboratory employs advanced methodologies to investigate the mechanisms underlying cognitive aging, encompassing various analytical levels, from neuronal gene expression crucial for memory-related synaptic changes to the intricate dynamics of large-scale neural networks associated with cognitive abilities. The responsibilities of this role include conducting behavioral assessments on rodents, managing biological sample collection, overseeing animal colony operations, performing data analysis and quality assurance, validating experimental protocols, and engaging in additional tasks as necessary.
- Conduct behavioral assessments on rats, utilizing techniques such as water maze tests, novel odor recognition, and social memory evaluations.
- Carry out biological sample collection, preparation, and preservation.
- Analyze data derived from behavioral assessments and maintain comprehensive databases of rodent colonies, experimental data, and biological samples.
- Assist in the design and execution of quantitative morphometric studies employing stereological techniques.
- Perform specialized tissue fixation, embedding, sectioning, and staining procedures.
- Update and submit animal protocols, including amendments and new submissions, to facilitate necessary animal research.
- Handle, dissect, and euthanize animals as required.
- Support and conduct animal survival surgeries, including intraspinal injections.
- Analyze animal tissues; prepare frozen slices and paraffin sections, ensuring appropriate staining to highlight normal and abnormal structures.
- Collaborate with team members to process tissue samples for immunohistochemistry.
- Maintain accurate laboratory notebooks and databases; collect, analyze, and interpret experimental data.
- Review, research, and analyze extensive datasets; conduct experiments using various statistical methods; interpret findings, create figures, and enter data into databases.
- Organize, edit, and archive both electronic and paper laboratory documentation, notebooks, and databases.
Qualifications :
- Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience or Psychology.
- A minimum of one (1) year of experience in cognitive science, biopsychology, or a neuroscience-related environment.
- Extensive experience in handling rats is essential.
- Experience in biological sample collection, preparation, and preservation is required.
- Proficiency in rat behavioral assessment techniques.
- Familiarity with diagnostic and/or behavioral equipment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Preferred Qualifications :
- Prior experience with the National Institute of Health (NIH) is advantageous.
