Job Summary

This position is located within the Service Delivery Area for the Mid Atlantic Service Unit (MASU) at the Monacan Health Center (MHC) in Madison Heights, Virginia. The purpose of the position is to serve as Supervisory Dental Officer over the Monacan Tribal Health Center Dental Program, supervise dental staff and to provide advanced dentistry services in accordance with the Indian Health Service policies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Makes oral and radiographic examination of the oral cavity and diagnosis of pathological or irregular conditions.
  • Performs restoration of simple and complex cavities with standard and prescribed materials.
  • Administers local anesthesia and nitrous oxide, as privileged.
  • Performs single and relatively uncomplicated multiple extractions of teeth.
  • Practices prosthetic dentistry by studying patient's mouth to determine type of restoration required, taking oral impressions and bite registrations for crowns, bridges and dentures, trying temporary set-ups in patient's mouth and fitting and inserting the finished appliances.
  • Performs uncomplicated root canal therapy on single and multi-canaled teeth.
  • Completes scaling and root planing, treating mouth and gum infections, and recognizes symptoms of an assortment of systemic diseases and referring cases for medical diagnosis and consultation regular conditions.
  • Performs routine restorative procedures such as amalgams, resins, and stainless-steel crowns on pediatric dental patients.
  • Responsible for the management and supervision of the dental program.
  • Assists in ensuring adequate access to care; continuous quality improvement; ensuring the program budget operates within appropriate guidelines and regulations, that funds are judiciously used; the management of contract dollars to support and supplement direct program activities; and program direction towards the goals and objectives established at a higher level by the Service Unit Chief Dental Officer and/or the Area Dental Officer
Requirements
  • Selectee may be subject to a probationary period.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. Due to this requirement, the agency must ensure that persons hired for these positions have not been found guilty of or pleaded nolo contendere or guilty to certain crimes.
  • A one-year supervisory/managerial probationary period may be required upon selection/placement.
  • Measles and Rubella immunization required for selectees born after 1957 and seasonal influenza immunization is required for all staff working in Indian Health Service health care facilities.
  • COVID-19 vaccination is required for all selectees prior to entrance on duty.
  • The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S) :

EDUCATION:

Applicants must have a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from a school approved by the American Dental Association (ADA) or the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

LICENSURE:

Applicants must have passed the National Board Dental Examinations (NBDE) which are developed and administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
