The Respiratory Care Assistant role at UPMC is designed for first-year respiratory therapy students to gain hands-on experience in an inpatient setting. This flexible work schedule is tailored to accommodate classes, with shifts of 4 hours, 4 days a week, and the option to work day or evening shifts.

Purpose:

Under the guidance of a respiratory therapist, the student respiratory care assistant will perform a variety of tasks, including ordering, inventorying, and distributing equipment, such as medical gases. Additionally, this role involves assisting clinical staff with various tasks as directed.

Responsibilities:

  • Exhibit exceptional service excellence by actively seeking, listening, and responding to the needs of patients, their families, physicians, staff, and others.
  • Maintain a sufficient supply of transport oxygen and ensure oxygen cylinders are readily available on all inpatient units, emergency department, and clinic areas.
  • Perform routine assembly, maintenance, and cleaning of various types of respiratory care equipment, disinfect equipment prior to calibration and assembly, and maintain appropriate levels of equipment in respiratory care work areas daily.
  • Transport dirty equipment to the designated area using proper infection control techniques.
  • Appropriately handle and use cleaning and disinfecting solutions and equipment.
  • Demonstrate proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Report equipment malfunctions to respiratory leadership.
  • Inspect equipment for correct assembly, ensure all parts are in proper working order, and perform preventative maintenance according to established protocols.
  • Check equipment to ensure proper function and calibrate equipment to department or manufacturer specifications.
  • Transport equipment between in-patient units and procedure areas as directed by a respiratory therapist.
  • May assist the biomedical technician in tracking respiratory care equipment.
  • Be responsible for all identification, cataloging, and tracking of respiratory care equipment.
  • Assist the respiratory therapist with bronchoscope procedures, setup before and after procedures, and processing of bronchoscopy scopes per manufacturer recommendations.
  • Assist the respiratory therapist with setting up for non-emergent intubations and extubations.
  • Assist the respiratory therapist with downloading and documenting 4-channel sleep studies.
  • Perform smoking cessation counseling per department policy.
  • Deliver home care supplies, such as oxygen tanks and compressors.
  • Maintain proficiency in Microsoft Office products, electronic health record platform, ePro system for ordering, and system for ordering prints.
