Position Summary

The veterinary care technician plays a crucial role in both inpatient and outpatient care, collaborating closely with veterinarians. Responsibilities include gathering patient histories, measuring vital signs and weights, collecting samples, conducting diagnostic tests, providing client education, and assisting with animal restraint. Technicians may also handle their own appointments for procedures that do not require a veterinarian's examination.

Core Responsibilities

Technical Duties (90%):

  • Support veterinarians in medical and surgical procedures.
  • Conduct in-house laboratory tests and prepare specimens for external laboratories.
  • Assist in outpatient examinations by gathering histories, vital signs, and weights while educating clients.
  • Provide nursing care for hospitalized patients.
  • Conduct pre-admission assessments and discharge procedures for hospitalized patients.
  • Perform follow-up calls to clients.
  • Ensure proper care and medication administration for boarding animals.
  • Maintain accurate medical records in collaboration with veterinarians.

Examination Duties:

  • Prepare and maintain cleanliness in examination rooms, including stocking supplies.
  • Assist veterinarians during examinations by collecting patient histories and vital signs.
  • Educate clients on preventive care and wellness topics.
  • Collect and analyze samples as directed by the veterinarian.
  • Fill prescriptions as per veterinarian instructions.
  • Conduct admission exams for hospitalized patients.
  • Perform pre-anesthetic evaluations for surgical patients.
  • Discharge patients post-procedure.

Laboratory Duties:

  • Oversee in-house laboratory testing.
  • Collect and prepare diagnostic samples.
  • Log and report diagnostic test results to veterinarians.
  • Maintain quality control and records for laboratory equipment.

Treatment Duties:

  • Administer treatments as indicated in medical records.
  • Assist with daily treatments under veterinarian supervision.
  • Monitor hospitalized patients.
  • Provide nursing care as needed.

Surgical Duties:

  • Admit patients scheduled for surgical procedures.
  • Prepare surgical materials and ensure the surgical area is ready.
  • Assist with patient restraint and anesthesia induction.
  • Monitor patients during and after anesthesia.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sterilization protocols in the surgical area.

Record Keeping Duties:

  • Update medical records with detailed notes on patient progress.
  • Communicate effectively with the veterinary team through medical records.

Housekeeping Duties (5%):

  • Maintain cleanliness in surgical and treatment areas.
  • Ensure all equipment is clean and in good working order.

Administrative Duties (3%):

  • Assist with inventory management and drug logging.
  • Support reception staff as needed.

Professional Development (2%):

  • Engage in continuing education opportunities as recommended.
Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate's degree in veterinary technology preferred.

Skills:

  • Ability to assist in veterinary medical practices.

Physical Requirements:

  • Capable of lifting up to 25 pounds and assisting with heavier loads.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced, noisy environment.
