Position Summary
The TIG Pipe Welder is responsible for planning, laying out, welding, installing, testing, and repairing various types of piping and similar tubular products in accordance with established plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards. Collaboration with other trades as directed by supervision is expected.
Key Responsibilities: The essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Adhere to company, federal, state, and local safety, ethics, and environmental regulations while performing tasks.
- Maintain regular attendance and the ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays.
- Examine layouts, blueprints, diagrams, or work orders in preparation for welding or cutting metal components.
- Execute welds to specified standards utilizing appropriate equipment and materials.
- Install and verify the operation of high-pressure steel pipes and fittings.
- Repair and replace damaged piping; fabricate and install metal fittings; install supports, valves, and other control equipment; secure parts in position for welding through bolting, clamping, or welding.
- Employ appropriate hand and power tools to accurately measure, cut, assemble, weld, and install all types of piping and similar tubular products.
- Test installed piping systems and incorporate other related items in accordance with applicable plans and specifications.
- Set up equipment and welding components using arc, gas-shielded arc, submerged arc, or gas welding techniques.
- Troubleshoot equipment as necessary.
- Produce high-quality welds, including water-tight penetrations, using various materials such as weld steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.
- Work independently with minimal supervision.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Experience: A minimum of three to five years of pipe welding experience is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Requires a working knowledge of equipment, processes, and techniques utilized in measuring, fitting, and welding steel. X-ray pipe welding experience is essential, with the ability to weld pipe in all positions and perform mirror welding. Familiarity with welding symbols, ship terminology, and OSHA and ABS standards is required. Candidates must pass the SMAW 6G Pipe Test to achieve ABS Certification.
Skills: Proficient in reading and comprehending written, verbal, or diagrammatic instructions. Ability to apply common sense to execute written and verbal directives. Competence in interpreting blueprints. Effective communication skills to present information and respond to inquiries from supervisors and colleagues. Knowledge of safe operation and usage of hand and power tools. Basic mathematical skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Proficiency in reading a tape measure.

Physical Demands: This role requires regular communication, frequent standing, walking, and the use of hands for handling or feeling. The position is physically demanding, necessitating bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing throughout the workday. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must be physically and medically qualified to wear all required personal protective equipment as per OSHA standards. The role may involve working at heights of at least 50 feet, using scaffolding or man-lifts, and operating in confined spaces while enduring extreme temperatures.
