Position Description

The Nurse Practice Specialist serves as the clinical and educational authority for a designated program or nursing practice area.

This role provides leadership to integrate innovative knowledge within a specialty area, ensuring that healthcare delivery is safe, timely, effective, evidence-based, equitable, efficient, and centered around patient and family needs. Collaborating interprofessionally, the specialist offers expert consultation to administrative leaders, educators, nurses, and physicians to enhance clinical practice and promote quality improvement initiatives aimed at improving patient and population health outcomes.

The Nurse Practice Specialist plays a crucial role in advancing nursing practice at various levels—unit, system, local, state, national, and international. This position is pivotal in applying and leading the Professional Practice/Care Transformation Model across the healthcare system. The specialist participates in and leads professional activities that maintain and enhance knowledge of current trends and practices, directing process improvement projects aligned with strategic healthcare innovation goals.

This role influences and guides care for complex patients facing multifaceted health issues, addressing biophysical, psycho-emotional, and spiritual needs at both individual and community levels. The specialist evaluates processes to ensure effective implementation and outcomes that meet patient goals and optimize care delivery.

Research & Publications

The Nurse Practice Specialist is instrumental in:

- Enhancing the health of individuals, families, and communities by equipping nurses and healthcare team members to recognize social determinants of health and identify facilitators and barriers to effective, equitable, and accessible care across the continuum.
- Acknowledging cultural influences and being attuned to the diverse needs of patients, families, staff, and other professionals.

This role exemplifies leadership in ethical decision-making and patient advocacy, engaging in continuous self-assessment and seeking feedback from colleagues, patients, and families. The specialist leads the implementation of principles of fair and just culture and utilizes coaching to foster high-functioning staff and multidisciplinary teams through advanced communication skills. Mentorship and coaching for professional development are key components, including collaboration with resident nurses on evidence-based projects and support for staff pursuing advanced degrees.

Minimum Qualifications

- Professional Nursing Certification required (CCRN, CEN, OCN, etc.)
- Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and a minimum of three years of clinical nursing experience as a Registered Nurse, with at least two years in the relevant specialty area.
- BLS and ACLS certifications are mandatory.
