Are you looking for a challenging career in civil engineering? The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is seeking a Civil Engineering Trainee to participate in a 12-month training program designed to develop basic engineering skills through a hands-on training approach in an on-the-job environment.

This is a training work position used to develop practical proficiency in the use of engineering knowledge, skills, and abilities in a bridge engineering, transportation engineering, and/or soils engineering environment.

As a Civil Engineering Trainee, you will participate in an on-the-job training program designed to develop practical proficiency in the use of engineering training received in school.

Some of the duties you will assist with include:

  • Assisting in performing surveys for highways and bridges in a transportation engineering environment;
  • Assisting in performing bridge design duties, bridge safety inspections, preparation of bridge plans, and preparation of highway plans, geotechnical reports, etc.;
  • Assisting in the preparation of highway and bridge construction projects;
  • Assisting in the District and/or county maintenance organizations with assigned maintenance and traffic engineering duties;
  • Assisting in performing other related duties as required for the training phase.

This is a full-time employment opportunity with work hours from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection.

Required qualifications include:

  • Four years of civil engineering experience, and an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists;
  • A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, or in a closely related field, which includes or was supplemented by major coursework in civil engineering;
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes possession of an Engineer-in-Training certificate issued by or acceptable to the Pennsylvania State Registration Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists.

Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within nine months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
