Position Overview:
UPMC Muncy Surgical Services is seeking a dedicated and skilled Senior Surgical Technician to join our team. This role is essential in ensuring the smooth operation of surgical procedures and maintaining high standards of patient care.

Work Schedule:
Variable Day Shift with no on-call or weekend obligations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the safe and effective execution of invasive surgical procedures under the direct supervision of a clinician.
  • Coordinate surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies to guarantee their proper use and availability for optimal patient service.
  • Perform advanced tasks in the operating room, including cleanup, equipment checks, and restocking.
  • Manage special trays, grafting materials, and record patient data during surgical procedures.
  • Instruct new employees and students on both practical skills and theoretical knowledge.
  • Efficiently pass instruments and sterile supplies to surgeons and their assistants during operations.
  • Under the surgeon's guidance, hold retractors, cut sutures, and assist in maintaining a sterile environment.
  • Oversee the repair, ordering, and maintenance of surgical supplies and equipment.
  • Assist in supervising the use of supplies and equipment to ensure patient safety during all procedures.
  • Prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments, sterile drapes, and solutions prior to operations.
  • Demonstrate problem-solving skills related to patient care and technical issues to enhance operating room efficiency.
  • Lead and supervise surgical technicians on a daily basis, addressing any questions or concerns.
  • Prepare patients for surgery, ensuring aseptic conditions and proper positioning.
  • Scrub and secure additional supplies as needed, maintaining asepsis and preparing for surgical procedures.
  • Assist in the care and disposal of specimens for laboratory analysis and apply dressings as required.
  • Support cost-effective practices in the use of materials and equipment.
  • Act as a resource for staff and other disciplines, identifying opportunities for process improvement.
  • Ensure proper labeling and handling of medications according to established protocols.
  • Assist in transferring patients to recovery post-surgery and maintain cleanliness in the operating room.
  • Provide mentorship to students and new employees as needed.

Qualifications:
Completion of a formal surgical technician program from an accredited institution is required. A minimum of three years of current operating room experience is essential. Candidates must hold Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification, as well as certification as a Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery-Certified (TSC).
