Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Pharmacy Intern to join our team at West Virginia University Hospital, Inc. The successful candidate will assist in all aspects of drug distribution, working under the supervision of a pharmacist to ensure the safe and efficient delivery of medications to patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the preparation and delivery of medications, including reading physician's orders and preparing medications for dispensing.
  • Read and interpret cart fill lists to replenish patient medications in medication carts and deliver contents to patient care areas according to schedule.
  • Accurately prepare and deliver controlled substances to patient units and maintain all necessary records.
  • Take inventory and analyze patient-care area medication supplies, replacing outdated or deteriorated medications and replenishing depleted inventory.
  • Assist in the preparation of sterile parenteral products under the supervision of a pharmacist.
  • Accurately prepare intravenous admixtures, including dilutions for pediatric patients, parenteral chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition, and other injectable preparations.
  • Enter information related to parenteral admixtures, parenteral chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition, and other injectable products in Pharmacy IV and TPN Computer Systems.
  • Label parenteral products appropriately and perform general operational functions of a pharmacy intern.
  • Perform arithmetic calculations for usual dosage determinations required in medication and solution preparation.
  • Perform initial checks for pediatric doses for appropriateness based on weight and gestational age.
  • Perform tasks in accordance with departmental standards established for speed and accuracy.
  • Prepare and label prepackaged medications after determining usage patterns and prepackaging requirements, and maintain records related to this.
  • Maintain inventory and supplies in assigned pharmacy service areas.
  • Answer telephone calls and channel them to the appropriate individual.
  • Ensure that pharmacy service areas and drug storage areas are kept clean and orderly.
  • Participate in planning and implementing change and maintaining and improving productivity through attendance and participation in staff meetings, committees, task forces, and projects.
  • Assist in the education of pharmacy students, pharmacy residents, new pharmacists, new pharmacy technicians, and pharmacy interns.
  • Prepare, process, and reprocess patient prescriptions and adjudications.
  • Follow up with third parties on rejected claims and coordinate efforts to fix the problem.
  • Assist with medication management therapy and pharmaceutical adherence programs.
  • Work and coordinate with unit floors in discharge patients' prescription and costs.
Requirements
  • Must be registration eligible and become licensed within 6 months of hire.
  • Must be enrolled in or accepted to an accredited School of Pharmacy, or be a graduate of an approved college of pharmacy or a foreign pharmacy who has obtained a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Committee certificate for purposes of getting required intern hours, or be a qualified graduate who is awaiting examination for licensure, or be an individual participating in a residency or fellowship program.
