JOB SUMMARY

The Recreational Therapist is responsible for assessing and treating patients through various therapeutic recreation activities. This role includes providing essential community resources to enhance patient care. The therapist will design and implement diverse recreational programs tailored to meet the emotional, social, physical, and recreational needs of patients. Additionally, the position involves educating patients and their families, ensuring accurate documentation, and maintaining ongoing communication with healthcare professionals.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions

* Upholds the mission of Swedish Medical Center and demonstrates a commitment to service excellence. Adheres to all hospital responsibilities and standards.

  1. Develops and implements a range of therapeutic recreation programs aimed at improving the overall environment and addressing the specific needs of the patient population.
  2. Conducts leisure assessments and other relevant evaluations for patients referred by physicians.
  3. Maintains thorough and timely documentation in accordance with departmental policies, including accurate patient charge records.
  4. Collaborates with medical staff and other healthcare team members to ensure effective communication and problem-solving regarding patient care.
  5. Supervises Activity Aides in patient treatment and organizes clinical experiences for students in Recreational Therapy.
  6. Engages with patients and their families to facilitate joint goal-setting and provide ongoing feedback regarding patient progress and treatment options.
  7. Represents the Recreational Therapy Department at hospital meetings and conferences, contributing to patient education and support initiatives.
  8. Participates in the training and development of co-workers and community personnel as requested.
  9. Contributes to program development and quality improvement initiatives.
  10. Continues professional development through attendance at relevant meetings, workshops, and training sessions.
  11. Assists with patient scheduling, charge entry, peer review, and program coordination as directed by supervisors. Ensures the treatment area is maintained in a safe and orderly condition and reports equipment and supply needs.
  12. Maintains productivity standards.
PATIENT CARE/AGE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

Recognizes and addresses the needs and behaviors of diverse disability, age, and ethnic groups, tailoring programs accordingly. Understands the aging process and its implications for patient care.

QUALIFICATIONS/BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's degree in Recreational Therapy from an accredited institution.
  • No prior experience required.
  • Strong communication skills, including proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Team-oriented with sound judgment and a patient-centered approach.
  • Effective organizational and time-management abilities.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION
  • Certification from the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation or eligibility for certification.
INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CONTACTS
  • Other hospital staff.
  • Visitors.
  • Patients.
  • Physicians.
  • Students from Occupational Therapy programs.
  • Representatives from community resource organizations and patient supply companies.
ENVIRONMENT
  • Sitting: 15% Standing/Walking: 85%.
  • Frequent patient transfers with minimal lifting or carrying of objects.
  • Repetitive tasks include word processing and typing for approximately 0-5% of the time.
  • Exposure to blood/body fluids and airborne pathogens during direct patient care.
