Overview

Under guidance, executes applied research initiatives related to wastewater management systems, either independently or in collaboration with other researchers.

Key Responsibilities

The following duties are essential and represent core functions typical of roles within this classification. This list is not exhaustive, and incumbents may perform additional tasks of a similar nature.

Conducts investigative assignments on wastewater and sludge treatment technologies, as well as in the areas of sanitary chemistry, microbiology, engineering, and environmental science. Aids Maintenance and Operations in addressing facility challenges such as sludge dewatering and odor control; engages in a collaborative monitoring program. Supports the Engineering Department by designing treatment methodologies. Performs laboratory, pilot, and field testing protocols. Collaborates on various projects under the direction of supervisors and external researchers.

Additional Responsibilities

Assists in the development of work plans, standard operating procedures, technical publications, and comprehensive reports on research initiatives. Reviews technical documentation from other departments or external organizations. Prepares or contributes to presentations and seminars related to research findings. Initiates and processes requisitions, payment forms, and other administrative tasks. Oversees, directs, and evaluates the work of subordinate staff. Performs other assigned duties as necessary.

Working Conditions

May involve exposure to various chemical and biological substances, some of which may pose hazards. Potential exposure to fumes and unpleasant odors is also possible.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Extensive knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques related to wastewater treatment, including sludge management. In-depth understanding of research methodologies for air, sludge, and water quality assessment, along with field and laboratory testing. Familiarity with analytical techniques applicable to wastewater, sludge, and air quality. Proficient in statistical methods for data analysis. Awareness of environmental regulations. Capability to lead, monitor, and engage in the development of research projects. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

Minimum Qualifications

A master's degree in water resources sciences, environmental sciences, environmental engineering, or sanitary engineering from an accredited institution.

Promotional Criteria

Possession of a master's degree in water resources sciences, environmental sciences, environmental engineering, or sanitary engineering. At least one year of experience with the District as a Senior Laboratory Technician or Senior Environmental Research Technician. Civil service status in one of the aforementioned classifications.
