Position Overview

Salary: $52,000 for probationary, non-certified personnel.

Albany County is actively seeking a dedicated Detention Deputy to join the Sheriff's Office. This role is a full-time, benefited position that entails performing essential duties associated with the Albany County Detention Center. Multiple vacancies are available, and the application process will remain open until all positions are filled.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED;
  • Must be at least 21 years old;
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License;
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen;
  • No prior felony convictions.

Please be aware that Detention Deputies are required to obtain certification from the State of Wyoming within their first year of employment, necessitating physical fitness and the ability to meet all POST requirements.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in correctional, law enforcement, or military settings;
  • Completion of college-level courses in corrections or human relations, or a comparable combination of experience and training;
  • POST Certification;
  • Familiarity with laws and regulations governing the operation of the County Detention Center;
  • Understanding of institutional management practices, including inmate care and custody;
  • Prior experience in supervising and managing inmates;
  • Experience in public interaction, record-keeping, and report generation;
  • Basic computer and typing skills.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Conducting bookings and searches of inmates, issuing clothing, and assigning living quarters;
  • Ensuring the safety of inmates from one another and themselves;
  • Coordinating medical and hospital care for inmates as needed;
  • Transporting inmates to medical facilities, institutions, and court;
  • Maintaining accurate records and generating reports as required;
  • Inspecting inmate quarters to identify unauthorized items;
  • Overseeing the feeding of inmates and managing eating utensils;
  • Escorting inmates to and from their cells;
  • Releasing inmates as directed by supervisory personnel;
  • Assisting medical staff in administering medication to inmates at prescribed times and dosages;
  • Cleaning the jail facility and administrative offices;
  • Occasionally performing extraditions and providing legal testimony;
  • Supervising inmates during visitation periods;
  • Occasionally facilitating services such as tutoring, mental health counseling, and religious services for inmates;
  • Serving warrants and summons as necessary;
  • Processing inmate property and mail;
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.
About the Role:

This position encompasses a variety of responsibilities related to the operation of the Detention Center and the safety and security of inmates. The Detention Division is structured with a Lieutenant as the Jail Administrator, a Sergeant as the Assistant Jail Administrator, and four Corporals overseeing shift operations. The Lieutenant and Sergeant manage the overall operations of the Detention Center, including personnel matters affecting the Detention Division. Corporals are tasked with supervising staff and managing shift responsibilities.

Additional opportunities for involvement in specialized assignments, such as high-angle rescue teams, underwater dive and recovery teams, and Search and Rescue operations, are available. Patrol Deputy positions may be filled from the current Detention Deputy pool.
