Automotive Technician I

PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to perform and assist with mechanical work involving servicing, maintenance, and repair of the Town’s fleet of automotive and mechanical equipment under the direction of the Chief Fleet Mechanic.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Services, maintains, and performs general mechanical repair work on the Town’s fleet of motor vehicles, police vehicles, hybrid and electric vehicles, medium/light equipment, small engines that are associated with weedeaters, edgers, hand mowers, chainsaws, cutting saws, small generators, pumps, etc., and boats, trailers, all terrain vehicles, and other automotive or mechanical equipment.
Examines vehicles to determine necessary repair or maintenance work; consults with drivers or equipment operators to obtain input on problems, assist in diagnosing problems, or to prevent future problems; removes wheels, tires, and bearings for utilization review and checks vehicles for tire wear; determines parts/supplies necessary to conduct repairs; provides repair estimates.
Performs appropriate repair, removal, replacement, rebuilding, or maintenance work on vehicle/equipment systems and components; removes or replaces brakes, wheels, steering components, shocks, transmissions, vehicle cylinder heads, differentials, suspension springs, starters, alternators, water pumps, or radiators; turns or replaces rotors/drums; replaces/repacks wheel bearings; replaces blower motors; removes or replaces engines, engine parts, and engine gaskets; checks engine timing and performance; repairs or replaces doors, lifts, seats, radios, lights, windows, and mirrors; tests pressure on coolant systems; replaces and recycles refrigerant in cooling systems; applies paint to equipment surface.
Removes special equipment, striping, and other special features from old town and police vehicles and equipment.
Performs routine servicing and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment, which may include pumping fuel into vehicles, checking/replacing fluid levels, draining/replacing oil, changing/replacing filters, replacing transmission fluid/filters, lubricating mechanical parts, rotating tires, aligning/balancing tires, replacing tires/belts/hoses, checking batteries, greasing equipment, flushing radiators, replacing spark plugs, performing tune-ups, replacing light bulbs, washing/detailing vehicles, or waxing vehicles.
Tests vehicles, machinery, equipment, and parts for proper operations; conducts road tests of vehicles undergoing repair; ensures safety of vehicle/equipment operations for transportation of employees or other passengers.
Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with repairing, maintaining, and testing vehicles and equipment, which may include a service truck, heavy/light equipment, vehicle lift, truck lift, digital, oscilloscope, engine analyzer, diagnostic machine, tire machine, tire balancer, alignment machine, parts cleaning machine, battery charger, brake lathe, hydraulic jack, air compressor, pressure washer, generator, vacuum pump, acetylene torch, oxygen torch, grinder, drill press, hydraulic press, bench grinder, oil filter crusher, refrigeration recovery machine, antifreeze recycling machine, transmission flush machine, gauges, meters, diagnostic instruments, power tools, or mechanic tools.
Conducts service calls for breakdown of vehicles/equipment at Town properties, work sites, or other off-site locations as needed; drives/transports replacement vehicles to site of broken-down vehicles/equipment; picks up and delivers vehicles to/from Town departments as needed.
Transports, loads and unloads various equipment, parts, and materials used in projects.
Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep department tools/equipment in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking/replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning shop/work areas, or emptying trash containers; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
Ensures availability of tools or supplies needed to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new or replacement items.
Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment
Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, vehicle maintenance repair forms, repair estimates, service records, or other documents. Logs record keeping and work orders through data entry into electronic devices and computer programs.
Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, work orders, repair estimates, diagnostic reports, alignment records, service records, technical manuals, schematics, diagrams, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, vendors/sales representatives, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Assists with road cleanup or other activities as needed.
Maintains an awareness of new procedures, trends, and advances in the profession; reads professional literature; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Communicate with and provide assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
Follow direction from supervisor regarding projects and order of work.
Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED.
Two (2) years previous experience and/or training that includes mechanics, automotive/mechanical engine repair/maintenance.
Must obtain ASE Brake Certification and ASE Front End Suspension Steering Certification or manufacturer equivalent within the first year of employment.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license. For application purposes, a valid driver’s license from any state (equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) may be utilized; with the ability to obtain the State of Florida driver’s license within thirty (30) days from the date of employment.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (10-50 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim light, or toxic agents.
