Overview

Under the supervision of the Shop Supervisor and Lead, the Facilities Electrician will be responsible for performing routine building electrician tasks. Executing assigned work orders and following all PPPL policies and procedures. Supports construction, maintenance, and upgrade of facilities infrastructures and systems. The technician will coordinate with other groups within the Department and throughout the Laboratory to ensure long-term, safe, and efficient operation of equipment.

Electrical Technician will be responsible for the installation, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of electrical systems throughout the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory.

Responsibilities
Core Duties

  • Perform maintenance, repairs, and new installations utilizing advanced troubleshooting skills all safety rules and regulations. Uses protective equipment to prevent electrical shock. Interprets wiring diagrams, engineering sketches and specifications to complete assigned work. Removes and replaces various types of wiring, cable, conduit, switches, fixtures, and circuits. Performs cable pulls through conduit and trays. Installs lighting and power circuits, fiber optic cables, power control equipment, and motors. Troubleshoots wiring and circuits; inspects equipment using testing equipment. - 70%
  • Assist with work in the shops when necessary to support other trades, severe weather work, corrective and preventative maintenance activities on facilities infrastructure, mechanical, electro-mechanical, hydronic and/or pneumatic systems. - 10%
  • Completes inspection and testing of life safety systems to include fire alarm panels, auxiliary equipment, emergency lighting and signs. Troubleshooting and repair of fiber optic cables. - 10%
  • Perform Other Duties as assigned by Supervisor. - 10%

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required. Associate Degree in a technical field, military experience, or equivalent is beneficial.
  • Completion of post-secondary electrical program.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Five plus years of experience performing electrical work.

  • Thorough understanding of the National Electric Code.

  • Demonstrated understanding and ability to work from blueprints, engineering sketches and wiring diagrams.

  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical problems.

  • Proficient with hand and shop tools and practices. Ability to install conduit, use of various types of test equipment.

  • Experience working with all types of wiring (including fiber optics) and knowledge of special electrician’s tools.

  • Familiar with various types of relays, motor controls, push buttons, float controls, interlocks, etc.

  • Understanding of transformers (including theory, types, and purpose).

  • Understanding of DC current theory and construction of battery power supplies.

  • Experience with installation and testing of fire alarm systems a plus.

Certificates and Licenses

  • Electrical Technician program certificate.
  • Electrical Journeyman certification.

Physical Requirements'

  • Work includes climbing ladders, lifting to 50 lbs., working in confined spaces, awkward positions, radiological controlled areas, heights, and outdoors. Position requires full mechanical dexterity.
