We want your knowledge and expertiseJob Summary of the Lead Nuclear Medicine Technologist The Nuclear Medicine Technologist produces images in accordance with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board (NMTCB) standards. Furthermore, the technologist will perform within the guidelines set by the Bureau of Radiation Control, Hospital Policies and Procedures Manual and the Radioactive Materials License. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is accountable to the Radiation Safety Officer for ensuring all regulations are in compliance in the Department. Provides services using radioisotopes to assist in the diagnosis or treatment of disease. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist demonstrates knowledge of the human structure and functions, patient care, positioning, principles of nuclear medicine, radiation protection and specialized techniques. Responsibilities of the Lead Nuclear Medicine Technologist Leadership Responsibilities: Lead and oversee the Nuclear Medicine Department to ensure the quality of work. On an on-going basis, monitor the job performance of each direct report. Ensure procedures and job-related activities are performed according to all technological standards. Conduct orientation of new employees according to Orientation Checklist and Job Description. Teach and train staff, recognize when others need assistance. Initiate coaching effectively by enlisting improvement in a positive manner, orally or writing. Coordinate and prioritize the department workflow to ensure completion of work assignments.Assign workload to shift, taking in consideration priority of the work and skill of employeeEffectively organize and prioritize workflow; meet STAT and urgent demands. Accountable for Nuclear Medicine Department functions and responsibilities. Ensure that all Nuclear Medicine rooms and units are clean and supplies are stocked at all times. Be familiar with and implement hospital procedures for reordering supplies. Oversee the completion of Incident Reports when warranted. Communicate with Radiologists, patients, physicians and others to achieve desired outcome. Demonstrate cost effective practices in the use of supplies, equipment and technical hours. Complete Imaging Quality Control and Performance Improvement functions, report monthly for the Imaging Department and quarterly to the Radiation Safety Officer. Assist the Radiation Safety Officer by completing mandatory test and evaluations. Ensure all Physicists’ recommendation and State violations are addressed and brought into compliance in a timely manner. Ensure the Radioactive Material License is updated as needed. Contribute to the effective management of the Department. Assist in identifying problems and solutions to improve departmental activities. Ensure the availability of the Nuclear Medicine Department 24 hours per day, taking full accountability for the Nuclear Medicine call schedule. Ensure the Department is in compliance with all Regulations and ACR, FDA, and State Regulations, Policies and Procedures. Interview and make recommendations in the hiring of quality staff according to Human Resources Policies & Procedures. Perform tasks assigned by Director, Manager, and Supervisor pertinent to department operations Technical Responsibilities: Consistently produce scans of optimal diagnostic quality on patients ranging from Neonatal to Geriatric. Follow established protocols for imaging and isotopes dosage; adjust when appropriate for age or disease. Can operate efficiently and effectively all Nuclear Medicine cameras, computers and related equipment. Complete quality scans in a timely manner, effectively organize and prioritize workflow. Demonstrate proficiency in scanning trauma, acute & challenging patients; possess the skill to modify positioning and scanning factors when standard cannot be performed. Possess knowledge of disease processes, image these findings adequately and communicate them to the Radiologist. Scan patient of all ages, tailoring the exam to the age group to provide optimal images. Maintain thorough knowledge of the operating parameters of all NM cameras and computers. Perform radioactive therapy procedures according to Nuclear Medicine Policies and Procedures and the Radioactive Material License. Follow set guidelines when performing venipunctures. Administer isotopes in accordance to prescribed protocols and policies. Oversee radioactive implants performed by Oncologist. Clinical responsibilities. Complete required documentation on forms, logs and in computer. Images are labeled and identified according to protocol. Review written orders, assess patient identification and ensure indicators are appropriate prior to procedure. Obtain all pertinent patient history, and relay it to the Radiologist to assist in diagnosis or treatment. Understand the need of Cardiologist during cardiac procedures and the Radiologist during I-131 therapy exams. Correctly complete Lab ordering. Demonstrate preparedness for patient arrest or critically ill patients. Operate laser camera and demonstrate basic trouble-shooting techniques. Ensure radiopharmaceuticals are received, stored and disposed of according to Nuclear Medicine Department policies and procedures. Is aware of radiation safety at all times. Protect self, patient, staff and public from unnecessary radiation. Screen and document the possibility of pregnancy and breast-feeding on all women of the childbearing age. Employ techniques to minimize radiation exposure by adhering to the ALARA program. Adhere to radiation plan, consistently demonstrate an awareness of radiation safety practices. Follow Patient Care and Safety Policies and Procedures. Explain procedures to patients and family in terms they understand, attempt to clarify any misconceptions. Maintain awareness of patient safety, patient privacy, confidentiality and dignity at all times. Follow Hospital and Department policies for blood and body fluids precautions. Ensure Nuclear Medicine and Departmental equipment is functioning properly, follow protocol for malfunctions. Safely transport patient by utilizing the transporting policies. Maintain a clean organized and safe work environment. Operate Department patient monitoring devices and equipment. Adhere to Hospital safety policies, Disaster/Safety Manual and Dept. Hazard Communication Manual. Maintain working knowledge of RRMC Hospital codes and related procedures. Provide full support by performing job-related duties. Report to work consistently and on time. Take call on a rotating basis. Arrive at RRMC within 30 minutes of receipt of call. Attend staff meetings. When absent is responsible for obtaining information from meetings. Display flexibility and volunteer to work odd or extra shifts when workloads or absences warrant. Perform clerical responsibilities as required. Operate any RRMC computer systems (Meditech, PCI, etc.) that relate to department operations. Complete assigned clerical and filing duties for each shift. Complete the charge processing for individual patient care items, drugs, contrast and exams. Participate in team-building and self- improvement activities. Preferred: Associate Degree or higher in Radiologic Technology. Two to three years of previous experience as a Radiologic Tech.
