Seen as a trusted, “in-demand” partner for Groups and project teams to continuously improve the way we work. Support and build Group capabilities to understand and effectively apply Mortenson’s Kaizen-based continuous improvement approach, including applicable tools and techniques, for Mortenson’s diverse types of work and work environments (e.g. Self-Perform, General Contractor, Business Services, Manufacturing, etc.). Coach Group and project leaders to build a continuous improvement culture and improve business outcomes.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Personal Development and Growth as a Continuous Improvement Resource. Continuously develop your own technical and leadership capabilities to coach and develop others, including becoming an expert in, and being able to teach, Mortenson’s Kaizen-based Continuous Improvement Approach”
- Create strong partnerships to establish trust and gain confidence in lean approaches. Effectively work and build relationships with those of diverse backgrounds and organizational levels, starting with Group leaders through Group Lean resources, project leaders and to the Craft workforce. Support leaders to establish the right focus and effort on the right things to build culture and drive business outcomes.
- Coach and develop key individuals within Mortenson’s Operating Groups and Service Groups to create a culture of continuous improvement within their Groups Lead team members by example, putting continuous effort to develop greater understanding and ability to coach team members to apply Mortenson’s continuous improvement approach.
- Coach, advise and partner with Group leaders, project leaders, and Group lean resources to identify and propose the best opportunities for improvement across the end-to end value stream, and to deliver the right activities to engage and build people while improving business outcomes.
- Engage field leaders to be personally involved in continuous improvement activities, building their capability to use the Kaizen-based continuous improvement approach.
- Mentor and develop the next generation of Lean professionals within the Group, ensuring they are progressing in their understanding and capability to coach others in Mortenson’s lean approach.
- Apply Mortenson’s Kaizen-based continuous improvement approach.
- Advocate for the approach and for how we engage team members to build capability.
- Partner with Groups and project teams to test, apply and improve the approach.
- Use the approach effectively with Mortenson construction project teams and manufacturing operations teams to improve business outcomes.
- Support Group and project leaders to prepare for, conduct, and follow up on improvement events.
- Learn and deploy the appropriate lean tools in line with the continuous improvement principles.
- Provide regular feedback to project leadership and the Group lean leader on the application of our lean approach. Assist in cross-project sharing, including Craft workforce participation/engagement, the activities undertaken, and related outcomes.
- Promote our people engagement practices and continuous improvement principles on-site.
- Mentor field leaders to sustain gains from improvement events, constantly apply the principles and continuously strive to make work easier for their people.
- Teach field leaders how to measure baseline performance and improvements, ensuring continuous visibility into improvements across projects and tasks.
- Help the Group establish group-wide standards for identifying normal vs. abnormal conditions, recognizing, and signaling abnormal conditions when they arise, and responding appropriately.
- Coach teams to share work process improvements and standardized work across crews and projects.
- Collaborate with Group leaders to acknowledge and recognize crews and teams for their contributions to improvements.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree in Operations Management, Construction Management, Industrial Engineering, or a related degree, or equivalent combination of education and technical/field experience demonstrated over multiple years of related work experience
- Must have construction or manufacturing experience
- Minimum of six years’ experience in a continuous improvement role
- Experience facilitating improvement activities and approaches (Improvement Events, Kaizen Events, Improvement Initiatives, Improvement Projects) using a defined approach
- Expert understanding of one (or more) school of thought, it’s related tools and practices within the field of continuous improvement (Kaizen/Toyota Production System, Lean, Business Process Improvement)

- Ability to travel up to 90% to diverse locations in the continental U.S.
