Summary

The Senior Economic Editor edits and rewrites text, tables, and figures in materials prepared by the staff of the economics divisions and on intranet and PubWeb sites maintained by the staff of those divisions. Using standard editorial techniques and general knowledge of economics, particularly the areas relevant to those divisions, the Senior Economic Editor ensures that the materials are logically arranged, that the language and technical complexity are appropriate for the intended audience, and that the style conforms to division standards. The Senior Economic Editor may assist more senior editors in carrying out those editors' assignments as well as assist in the development of junior editors. The Senior Economic Editor also coordinates the layout and printing of materials for external publication with the staff of Publishing and Communications Support in the Office of Board Members (BDM). The Senior Economic Editor often collaborates with authors in presenting verbal and graphical material in an unambiguous fashion by making organizational, stylistic, grammatical, and substantive changes, rewriting as necessary; may serve as a writing coach.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Collaborates with authors in presenting verbal and graphic material in an unambiguous fashion by making organizational, stylistic, grammatical, and substantive changes and by rewriting. Edits documents, such as memorandums, working papers, Tealbooks, and transcripts, as well as high-level policy materials, including memorandums and reports to the Board and the FOMC that are authored in the economics divisions.
  • Devises approaches to the presentation of material, text, tables, and charts to best convey the information to the reader.
  • Oversees all aspects of the production process. Coordinates the preparation of materials for external publication with the staff of the graphics, editing, and print shop sections of BDM's Publishing and Communications Support and the editorial review of speeches and testimony with the staff of the offices of Public Affairs and Congressional Liaison.
  • In consultation with the section chief, assigns editorial tasks to other members of the section and reviews the results.
  • Serves as project manager, such as figures coordinator for the Monetary Policy Report. May help more senior editors organize major projects and may serve as backup for a senior editor in executing those projects.
  • Uses a wide range of software available to the economics divisions for document preparation and distribution.
  • In consultation with computing and information management professionals, devises ways to use the network for all stages of editing and production up to printing.
  • Participates with other members of the section in the economics divisions' planning for further use of the software.
  • Participates with other members of the section in establishing the economics divisions' editorial policy and style.
  • Develops own professional skills. Maintains awareness of evolving technologies through professional publications and outside contacts. Identifies appropriate directions for own development and initiates activities to bring about that development.


Position Requirements

The Program Direction Office in the Division of Research & Statistics has an opening for a full-time senior economic editor.

Senior economic editors review and provide editorial guidance on the text, tables, and graphics in materials prepared by the staff of the Board's economics divisions. Using standard editorial techniques and a general knowledge of economics, senior economic editors ensure that these materials conform to established standards of grammar, language usage, style, and format.

Senior economic editors organize major projects such as the Monetary Policy Report; they also coordinate the editorial review of high-level policy materials, including reports to the Board and the FOMC, and speeches and congressional testimonies of Board members that are authored in the economics divisions. The editor is recognized as an expert in writing, editing, and publishing.

Job Qualifications

Candidates for this position must meet the following qualifications:
  • Minimum four years of experience in technical or academic writing or editing, including editing tables and figure
  • A bachelor's degree, preferably in English or the social science
  • Strong editing and project management skills
  • Serious attention to detail and commitment to high-quality work
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and adapt to shifting priorities
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively

The ideal candidate may also have the following qualifications:
  • Experience providing feedback to others, such as tutoring, teaching, or university writing center experience
  • Experience in editing using tracked changes in Microsoft Word and managing documents in Microsoft SharePoint
  • Experience with publication software such as Adobe InDesign
  • Experience using a style guide
  • Have solid project management skills, including organization and time management
  • Experience working with non-native English speakers
  • College-level coursework in economics; understanding of the role of the Federal Reserve
  • Awareness of section 508 requirements and accessibility best practices
  • Basic facility with document design and web design
