Environmental Compliance Specialist

Position Summary:
This position is responsible for supporting the company’s sustainability efforts and ensuring compliance with various environmental regulations including wastewater/stormwater discharges, aboveground/underground storage tanks, spill prevention, control and countermeasures plans (SPCC), hazardous and non-hazardous waste disposal, OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard and other regulatory requirements that effect the business. Additionally, this position is responsible for providing analytic support for the development of compliance and sustainability strategies.
Major Responsibilities:
- Prepare and submit annual/periodic compliance reports, permit applications, regulatory plans to regulatory agency on behalf of the Company.
- Prepare environmental compliance reports/letters/plans to regulatory agencies.
- Signing authority for legal documents requires advanced level of understanding and demonstrated leadership in order to execute regulatory plans.
- Utilize metrics and plans to and actively lead field locations with corrective action related to compliance issues identified during regulatory inspections.
- Make decisions to implement solutions to improve compliance, reduce costs, improve cycle times, etc with field and corporate leaders across the Penske enterprise.
- Provide support, consultation, and decision making of environmental related matters to other Departments (Facilities, Real Estate) and field customers, related to environmental issues.
- Oversee inspections/investigations and any necessary corrective action to address environmental issues (i.e., subsurface investigations, asbestos, mold, indoor air quality).
- Execution of work requires signing authority for legal documents attesting that procedures and regulatory requirements are met.
- Other projects/tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree required in Environmental Science, Geology, Engineering, Occupational Safety and/or other applicable field.
- Preferred: Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Professional Geologist (PG), Professional Engineer (PE), Registered Environmental Manager (REM), Registered Environmental Professional (REP), or other applicable certification.
- Minimum 2 years of experience working in the environmental field with knowledge of environmental regulations as they relate to the transportation industry. These regulations include, but are not limited to: Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, Oil Pollution Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), CERCLA, EPCRA, and the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA)
- Must possess basic knowledge and understanding of Federal EPA regulations.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office products (Microsoft Access, Excel, Word)
- Must have excellent written and verbal communications skills; be decisive, confident, organized and creative.
- Proficient in management, process management and improvement skills.
- Must have a complete grasp of environmental laws/regulations and the company’s business operations and be able to use this knowledge to develop solutions aligning with major responsibilities above.
- Interpersonal skills, including influencing and relationship building.
- Deal with a diverse and multinational group of internal and external customers, and local, state, and federal regulators and municipalities, contractors, and other property and business owners.
- Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of the job
- Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time throughout North America or as needed.
