Cleveland, United States Objective Paradigm Full time

Senior Release Train Engineer

The Senior Release Train Engineer (RTE) is responsible for facilitating several Agile Release Trains (ART) events and processes and supports teams in delivering value. The RTE will serve as an ART coach who brings facilitation, collaboration, and scaled agile framework (SAFe) expertise to facilitate Agile ART events and processes, and help teams deliver value. The RTE communicates with stakeholders (Process Governance, Product Manager/Product Owner, Functional Support teams, development teams), escalate impediments, help manage risk and schedules, and drive improvements.

In addition to facilitating ART and supporting cross-functional teams, the successful candidate will train and mentor team members on best practices for scaled agile framework (SAFe).

Essential Functions

Strategy & Planning

  • Facilitate several PI events which happens in a synchronized cadence (every quarter or 90 days)
  • Facilitate several feature estimation workshops by teams and the roll-up to Epics
  • PI capacity planning technique is utilized - stays within Release Train (RT) velocity
  • Support development of Epic Review
  • Help track the delivery of features to ART stakeholders/end-user
  • Coach leaders, teams, and Scrum Masters in Lean-Agile practices and mindsets
  • Drive relentless improvement via Inspect and Adapt workshops; assess the agility level of the ART; help the ART improve
  • Elevate impediments impacting teams to ART leadership to ensure they are addressed/resolved before they negatively impact planned execution
  • RTE protects the RT (long lived scrum teams) from external disturbance - guards the RT
  • PI scope during PI execution - acts as a Chief Scrum Master - provides feedback to SMs if they haven't established team working agreements - makes sure RT champions the DoR and DoD criteria
  • RTE is responsible to use tools for Pre-PI Planning activities, Virtual PI Planning, and PI execution - create a one-time, quarterly dashboard in tools and track the PI execution

hygiene during SoS - at quarterly intervals, measure the RT health and share that input to the appropriate stakeholders

  • RTE makes sure that PM meets the DoR criteria before RT establishes PI objectives including NFRs and enablers
  • Actively participate and facilitate pre-PI Planning meetings, Virtual PI Planning event,
  • System Demo, SoS, I&A RT events - actively participates in SM CoP, share and learn new practices and champions it within the RT
  • RTE actively collaborates with other RTE's and SM's (as needed) to resolve dependencies, risks, and impediments across intra RTs

ART sync-up:

  • Facilitate SM SoS at least once a week (30 to 60 minutes) and PO-PM Sync-up at least once a week (30 to 60 minutes)

System Demo:

  • Facilitate System Demo at the end of every Sprint - this is NOT same as sprint demo.
  • System Demo is conducted every sprint across the entire RT. For example, 1 week into the second Sprint, conduct Sprint 1 System Demo and so on for other sprints Objective evaluation of working system in the ONLY measure of progress
  • System demo purpose is to demo fully finished features that are committed as part of PI Planning. This is an integration of all scrum teams deliverables coming together in a neutral environment (like staging) as part of a feature delivery

ART Backlog Refinement:

  • Facilitate this event starting mid of current PI execution involving cross-functional stakeholders (for example: PM, Architects, System Team, Engineering Leaders, Solution Management, IE, UX, Shared Services etc.,)

PI Execution:

  • RTE makes sure that all scrum teams that are part of RT follows DoD criteria and meet the quality aspect of their PI objectives including NFRs and enablers
  • RTE reviews scrum team metrics during SoS to discuss about RT progress, impediments and risks that are unresolved and need attention - collects data iteratively for I&A (Quantitative metrics)
  • RTE influences relentless improvement at RT level (improvements coming out of Problem-Solving Workshop in I&A entering the next PI Program backlog)
  • Encourages scrum team to participate in tech talks and agile brown bag sessions during IP sprint as part of relentless improvements
