Unit Notes
Department: MedSurg | RN

- Unit: MedSurg - Floor 5
- # of Beds: 35
- Nurse:Patient Ratios: generally 1:5 do have some pt populations that are 1:4-neck dissections, facial reconstructions,
epilepsy pts.
- Required certifications: BLS
- Common diagnoses/Types of patients: Ortho- total joints, ankle knee, hip, shoulder; traumatic fractures; ENT- thyroid
surgeries, lap nissens, neck dissections (donor site, new site with implanted dopplers and 30 minute doppler checks,
trachs) and facial reconstructions; Eyes-Graves disease patients have surgery on muscles to pull the eyes back; ED and
ICU transfers- a lot of sepsis pts, a lot of high flow O2; Pediatric overflow patients- pneumonia, ortho surgeries, some
peds behavioral- all peds on this unit have to qualify for adult ACLS weight wise, no ped med dosing- treated like an
adult; General MedSurg- appys, choles, pneumonia, COPD. 3 epilepsy beds- These patients are scheduled with an
epileptologist- they come in Monday morning after stopping seizure meds the day before and are hooked up to EEG
and video monitoring to see where the seizures are coming from, if they are true seizures, do they need med
adjustments, or if surgery is needed- most usually discharge by Thursday- will generally not give these patients to
travelers unless they specifically want to take them.
- Experience or 'Must have' skills: Must have 1 year experience and be willing to learn and ask questions. Must be able
to read and interpret tele- starting in July.
- Are RNs required to titrate drips: No
- Common titratable &/or set rate drips: heparin.
- Is there a Charge Nurse on each shift: Charge nurse that does not take patients. Also have 2 Assistant Managers on days
and 1 on nights that are out on the floor touching base with travelers and helping provide education if needed. Unit
based educator just for unit who is here every day.
- Are there nurse aids/patient care techs on this unit? Ratios: 1:08
- RT Equipment: High flow and home regimen CPAP and BiPAP can't be day time dependent.
- Are there tele/monitor techs on this unit: Must be able to read and interpret
- Shifts & Scheduling: 7-7. Travelers will fill in the holes where there is a need. Do try to schedule night shifts together but
not guaranteed.
- Weekend Requirement: Will fill in there is a need
- Holiday Requirement: Will fill in if there is a need
- Is there Call or a Standby requirement: N/A
- Floating Requirements: Will float to like units here (4,5,6,9- generally won't take specialty pts on these floors). May also
float to Meridian Medical Center and Nampa Medical Center to MedSurg floors only.
- Scrub Color/Dress Code/Scrubs provided: No specific color as long as clean and professional.
- How many shifts of unit/department specific orientation: 1 day of orientation on the floor.

**This facility has a radius rule of 50 miles. To ensure adherence to this rule, we will require the candidates' perm address in the submittal to confirm they are outside of that specified radius before proceeding with the profile review.**
