The Director of Nursing at St. Joseph Village is responsible for overseeing the nursing department's operations while ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations. This role involves staff management, care coordination, and quality assurance to enhance resident care in a skilled nursing facility. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, a nursing degree, and significant experience in nursing management.
Overview:St. Joseph Village is looking for a Director of Nursing (DON) The primary function of the Nursing Director is to plan, organize, develop and direct the overall operation of the nursing department in accordance with current applicable federal and state agency regulations and with current standards of gerontological nursing practice. St. Joseph Village of Chicago is a assisted living, memory support assisted living, sheltered care, and skilled nursing/long-term care. Additionally, the onsite rehabilitation clinic offers inpatient and outpatient physical, occupational, and speech therapies, and state-of-the-art programs designed to enhance the quality of life for residents and patients in the local community.
Position Summary
In this role, you will be responsible for planning, organizing, developing and directing the overall operations of the Nursing Department in accordance with local, state, and federal standards and regulations as well as established community policies and procedures.
Essential Functions, Key Duties, & Responsibilities
- Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate and direct the overall operations of the Nursing Services department, as well as its programs and activities, in accordance with current state and federal laws and regulations.
- Interpret and communicate policies and procedures to nursing staff, and monitor staff practices and implementation.
- Participate in all admission decisions.
- Participate in daily management team meetings to discuss census changes, resident changes in status, complaints or concerns.
- Evaluate work performance of all nursing personnel and implement discipline according to operational policies.
- Participate in QAPI or facility assessment activities as needed, such as carrying out duties assigned as part of a performance improvement committee.
- Ensure delivery of compassionate quality care and nursing supervision as evidenced by adequate staff coverage on the units, general cleanliness, and maintaining optimal resident functions.
- Collaborate with members of the interdisciplinary team, physicians, consultants, and community agencies to identify and resolve issues and improve the quality of services.
- Oversee nursing schedules to ensure resident needs, regulatory and budget standards are met.
- Participate in the recruitment, hiring and termination of nursing personnel.
- Perform rounds to observe residents and ensure nursing needs are being met.
- Conduct observations of nursing care and supervise development of in-service education to ensure nursing staff is competent in current knowledge and skills.
- Participate in budget development for the nursing department, medical, nursing and central supplies.
- Assist in the preparation of inspection surveys, including staff in-services on survey processes, and participation in mock surveys as indicated.
- Participate in the facility’s plan of correction response to an inspection survey and implement any follow-up required for nursing allegations.
- Communicate directly with residents, medical and nursing staff, family members, department heads and members of the interdisciplinary team to coordinate care and services and respond to and resolve complaints and concerns.
- Oversee resident incidents and concerns daily to identify any unusual occurrences and report them promptly to the Administrator and/or state agency for appropriate action.
- Monitor for allegations of potential abuse or neglect, or misappropriation of resident property and participate in the investigative process.
- May provide direct nursing care as necessary.
- Act in an administrative capacity in the absence of the Administrator.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Comply with all policies and procedures and any updates.
Position Requirements
Education: Associates or Bachelors degree in Nursing
Licenses/Certifications: Active Nurse license & current CPR certification
Experience: 3+ years of nursing management experience
Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations and guidelines pertaining to long-term care.
- High degree of integrity.
- Strong communicator and capable of leading change.
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize projects and deadlines concurrently.
- Proficiency in electronic health records, Point Click Care experience preferred.
