Job Description:

Nurse managers are nurse leaders with 24 hour accountability and responsibility for a direct care unit or units. They provide the vital link between the administrative strategic plan and the point of care. The nurse manager is responsible for creating safe, healthy environments that support the work of the health care team and contribute to patient engagement. The role is influential in creating a professional environment and fostering a culture where interdisciplinary team members are able to contribute to optimal patient outcomes and grow professionally.

Human Resources

  • Develops staffing matrices that facilitate safe, quality patient care using practice standards and stewarding resources. 
  • Evaluates staffing patterns and unit demands. Match competency and patient acuity.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of labor laws and organizational policies related to human resources.
  • Recruits, interviews, hires, and onboards new associates.
  • Conducts associate evaluations, assist with goal setting, and when necessary initiates corrective action
  • Facilitates associate education, ensure competency validation, and promote professional development.
  • Retention of associates
  • Promotes cultural competence and an environment that embraces diversity.

Clinical Practice Knowledge

  • Demonstrates a growing knowledge of the patient populations and standards of care delivery in which the unit(s) serve.

Performance Improvement

  • Facilitates performance improvement by identifying key performance indicators, establishing data collection methodology, evaluates data, and responds to findings with the development of action plans.
  • Routinely assesses patient satisfaction and develops strategies to improve the patient experience.
  • Monitors and reports patient and associate safety events. Participates in root cause analysis, promotes evidence based practice changes, and manages incident reporting
  • Maintains regulatory and survey readiness.
  • Monitors and promotes workplace safety.

Strategy

  • Facilitates and manages change.
  • Demonstrates project management skills.
  • Participates in emergency response planning and preparation.

Technology

  • Demonstrates an in depth understanding of the EHR and technology used to deliver and document patient care. 
  • Considers the integration of technology to improve care delivery.

Finance

  • Responsible for the daily operations of one or more units
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the operational and capital budget process.
  • Promotes stewardship of resources and working within financial targets
  • Monitors budget variances providing rationale and developing action plans.
  • Promotes the effective flow of the patient through the organization.

  • Effectively manages conflicts and promotes collaborative relationships.
  • Demonstrates effective situational management - identifying issues that need immediate response and applying principles of crisis management as necessary.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a bachelor’s of science degree in nursing (BSN).
  • Current license to practice in the state of assigned position (or ability to obtain license)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) upon hire
  • Advanced Care Life Support (ACLS) within 6 months of hire
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within 6 months of hire
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) within two years of hire
  • Leadership experience - leading committees, councils, or professional organizations

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in nursing (MSN)

Formal leadership experience as a charge nurse, supervisor

Experience with performance improvement processes/tools (e.g. High Reliability Organization, Lean, IHI)

Physical Requirements:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Physical Requirements

Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.

Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.

Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.

Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.

Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)

May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.

For roles requiring driving: Expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.

The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.
