The Registered Nurse in the Colorectal Surgery Unit at Cleveland Clinic provides specialized care for patients undergoing complex surgical procedures and treatments. This position involves developing and implementing patient care plans while monitoring and documenting patient conditions in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will have acute care nursing experience, a current RN license, and a commitment to patient education and support.

As a caregiver on H51, you are provided invaluable experience caring for patients with complicated medical histories, complex dressings, innovative surgical procedures, pain modalities, and comprehensive nutritional support. One of the few nursing units in the world dedicated almost exclusively to the care of colorectal surgery patients, H51 caregivers have pioneered curative surgeries for ulcerative colitis and colon cancer. Our veteran nursing staff is excited to educate and mentor the nurses and caregivers of tomorrow .  


A caregiver in this position works Day/Night Rotation, from 7:00am—7:30pm or 7:00pm—7:30am.   

A caregiver also works every other weekend.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

· Provide direct nursing care.

· Implement, monitor, evaluate, update and revise patient care plans.

· Monitor, record, document and communicate patients’ conditions.

· Administer prescribed medications and treatments.

· Note and carry out physician and nursing orders.

· Assess and coordinate patients’ discharge needs.

· Educate patients and their families.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

· Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing.

· Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).

· Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA).

· One-year of current acute care RN experience. Will consider military RN experience.

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

· Bachelor of science in nursing (BSN).

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.

  • Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.

  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.

  • Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours.

  • Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.

  • Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
