Position Overview:

The Overnight ER Veterinary Technician provides critical support to the emergency team in delivering exceptional care to our patients during overnight hours. This role is focused on providing care to patients in urgent need by conducting and assisting with emergency-specific diagnostic procedures, closely monitoring patients during diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, and facilitating daily oversight of the duties outlined below to deliver high-quality emergency veterinary care services to our patients and clients.

Essential Position Functions:
  • Performing timely and appropriate triage of patients presenting to the ER.
  • Performing initial diagnostics, including but not limited to imaging and lab work, on incoming triages.
  • Ensuring appropriate submission of outgoing lab work, both to IDEXX and other outside labs.
  • Competency in conducting anesthesia and monitoring for basic procedures, including laceration repairs, urinary unblocking, centesis and other emergent procedures.
  • Discharging ICU/ER patients, reviewing instructions with owners, making sure owners sign discharges electronically.
  • Charge capture on any procedures or tests performed prior to transfer to the ICU technician.
  • Appropriate and thorough rounding of the ICU tech upon admission and transfer of any incoming patient to the ICU tech. If completing a shift prior to admission or discharge of patients they have actively been working on, appropriate and thorough rounding of the next ER tech as to the current status of these cases.
  • Completion of initial treatments/diagnostics and treatment sheets prior to admission for inpatients and prescription of medications or any other treatments for outpatients prior to discharge.
  • Completion of treatment sheets prior to transfer of patient to ICU technician.
  • Checking prescription refill callbacks frequently throughout the shift.
  • Answering phone calls and providing information to potential clients coming in through the ER, clients with hospitalized patients and with those that have ongoing treatment or were recently seen.

  • Strong triage skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple cases simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Confidence and compassion in caring for all patients, displaying professionalism in high-stress situations with strong communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented in maintaining accurate patient records and thorough communication with clients regarding their pet's status and care instructions.
  • Comfortable with flexible scheduling, including weekends and/or holidays, to meet the needs of the hospital.
  • Physical ability to handle and restrain animals, perform lifting, and engage in activities requiring movement and strength.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One to 3 years of experience working as a veterinary technician within ER, ICU, or specialty service setting strongly preferred.
  • Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), or Licensed Veterinary Medical Technician (LVMT) preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and experience in other specialty veterinary fields will be considered.
