We are seeking a strategic food safety and quality professional that establishes and communicates a compelling and inspired vision, creates competitive winning strategies and plans, by ensuring department strategies are aligned with the company strategies. This position will work closely with cross-functional teams, Global Product Safety & Quality (GPSQ) partners, and suppliers while playing a pivotal role leading the development of a vision for quality at Starbucks. Leadership - Set goals for the work group, develop organizational capability, and model how we work together:

  • Identify and communicate key responsibilities and practices to ensure the immediate team of direct reports promotes a successful attitude, confidence in leadership, and teamwork to achieve business results.

  • Support the implementation of Company programs, procedures, methods, and practices to promote Starbucks key messages and achieve a competitive advantage.

Planning and Execution - Develop strategic and operational plans for the work group, managing execution, and measuring results:

  • Contribute to the development of long-term strategies and plans for the business unit/department.

  • Plan and manage business unit and department processes and practices to ensure that programs are aligned with company business goals and objectives.

  • Prepare, communicate, and educate client groups and team on changes in policies and practices within the organization.

Business Requirements - Provide functional expertise and executing functional responsibilities:

  • Assure compliance to quality and product safety standards from source of supply to consumer.

  • Develop an integrated quality assurance program and budget covering food, packaging, merchandise, product distribution channels and retail facilities.

  • Implement and manage the product safety and quality assurance program to ensure that product safety, quality and regulatory compliance standards are met for all food, packaging and merchandise items manufactured and sold in Starbucks retail stores.

  • Manage quality assurance projects and supervise partners.

  • Monitor the effectiveness and compliance of an ongoing training program on safe food handling and sanitation practices.

Partner Development & Team Building - Provide partners with coaching, feedback, and developmental opportunities and building effective teams:

  • Challenge and inspire partners to achieve business results.

  • Conduct and ensure the completion of performance reviews.

  • Ensure partners adhere to legal and operational compliance requirements.

  • Oversee training and development of partners directly and indirectly managed and makes effective staffing decisions.

  • Provide coaching, direction, and leadership support to team members to achieve partner, business, and customer results.

We’d love to hear from people with:

  • Progressive experience managing a research and development or quality assurance department.

  • Deep expertise (10+ years) in food technology, food science, manufacturing, equipment, quality assurance, microbiology, statistical analysis, FMEA, or food safety.

  • General Science (4 year), Food Safety, Microbiology, or Food Science Degree

  • Knowledge of GMPs, HACCP Principles, GFSI schemes.

  • ·Expertise in consumer product regulatory and product safety under the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Food & Drug Administration (FDA - food and food contact materials), USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) and state regulations.

  • ·Experience with substantiation of product claims under the Federal Trade Commission, and capability to research, interpret, and provide guidance requirements for product claims (preferred)

  • Food safety certifications such as safe food handling, sanitation, PCQI, HACCP, etc. (preferred)

  • Auditing experience & lean 6-sigma is a plus, but not required.

  • Ability to balance multiple, complex projects and programs and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to navigate in an ambiguous and fast-paced environment.

  • Effective and influential relationship building, internally at different levels within the organization and externally with suppliers and 3rd party providers.

  • Ability to prepare clear and concise verbal, written and visual presentations that effectively utilize storytelling techniques.

  • Motivation skills

  • Ability to apply sound business principles and practices to project management and change management processes.

*If you are working in CA, CO, IL, LA, ME, MA, NE, ND or RI, you will accrue vacation up to a maximum of 120 hours (190 in CA) for roles below director and 200 hours (316 in CA) for roles at director or above. For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above.

The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
