Major Responsibilities:
  • Organizes and prepares exam rooms and work areas including: cleaning, stocking, ordering supplies, checking equipment, and putting away equipment. Organizes and prepares exam rooms, including: ordering supplies, stocking and cleaning equipment.
  • Prepares patient for exam and assists physician. Obtains and records ocular and medical history, medications, and chief complaint. Documents and communicates accurate and timely information regarding the patient's condition.
  • Performs basic to complex diagnostic tests and visual screenings, such as: visual field/acuity, tonometry / glaucoma pressures / color vision testing, lensometry, A-Scans, ocular motility, corneal topography, and glare testing.
  • Assists the ophthalmologist with surgical procedures and post-operative care or treatment.
  • Performs medical eye photography functions as directed by the physician, which may include taking general optic nerve, retinal and macular photos, and fluorescein angiograms, etc.
  • Maintains and calibrates equipment.
  • Sterilizes instruments using appropriate technique and procedures.
  • Assists with scheduling patients for post-operative, surgery and specialist appointments.
  • Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Age-specific information is developed further in the departmental job standards.
Education/Experience Required:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent. 1 year Healthcare and/or Ophthalmic experience
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
  • Good communication skills Ability to type a minimum of 20wpm preferred.
  • CPR Certification within 90 days
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Must be able to successfully complete clinic-based training for all associates. Ability to work with all levels of personnel. Ability to work under stressful situations. Frequent periods of extended standing and sitting. Possible lifting and assisting of patients.
  • If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
