Critical Care Nurse

Position Summary:
A critical care nurse is responsible for providing direct nursing care to patients in need, with emphasis on supporting those who are critically ill. They must ensure that they adhere to the Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures for optimal patient care for all age groups.
Detailed responsibilities:
- Provide leadership in patient care within the unit and oversee the care provided by other clinical team members.
- Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures, and protocols to ensure optimum patient care.
- Participate in educational programs to keep up-to-date with current literature, in-services, meetings, and workshops.
- Maintain a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients/families according to Hospitals standards.
- Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk.
- Work within Hospitals, Nursing division, and departmental policies.
- Collaborate with the healthcare team and implement and document individualized care plans incorporating age-specific considerations, including discharge planning and patient/family teaching.
- Administer medication, including IV medication, ensuring to document and communicate clinical findings.
- Assist with special tests and procedures, ensuring that proper consent has been obtained.
- Assist with or institute emergency measures for sudden, adverse developments in patients.
- Deliver safe direct care to an assigned group of patients as required.
- Ensure that patient medical records contain necessary information.
- Answer telephones and triage calls as per departmental policy.
- Participate in orientation and assume preceptor training responsibilities of new personnel on successful completion.
- Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors, and/or near misses in a timely manner.
- Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care.
Qualifications
- Education: Program Graduate from a Nationally Accredited Nursing program with a Bachelor's Degree (preferred).
- Experience: Minimum of two years directly related experience.
- Credentials: RN in the state of practice or as allowed by reciprocal agreement with the state of practice; CPR for Healthcare/ Basic Life Support within 30 days of employment. Nationally Certified in the area of specialty, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC), and/or Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) preferred.
- Physical Conditions: Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people.
- Working Conditions: Significant Hazard due to chemical and bio-hazardous materials in use. Requires Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
