I) Job Purpose

The Medical Assistant (MA) performs duties under direction of a clinical supervisor (RN/LVN/Physician/APRN/PA) to assist in examination and treatment of individuals served at the clinical site. Under general supervision, the medical assistant makes interpretations and exercises some discretion in routine situations. The medical assistant provides direct care with utmost customer service, compassion, and integrity to individuals in a clinic setting.

II) Essential Functions

A) Responsible for behavioral program and clinic functions including placing individual patients in rooms, obtaining, and measuring vital signs, as well as taking the medical history and reason for seeking care. Documents the information in the medical record or the electronic record.

B) Informs a clinical supervisor of any vital signs outside of parameters, or medication or medical history concerns.

C) Prepares and maintains examination/treatment rooms, including cleaning and sanitizing instruments, and inventory of medical supplies and materials.

D) Calls individuals to ask questions and follow-up on medication calls and documents the calls on a medication call form or documents in the electronic health record.

E) Acts as a designated agent for calling in or faxing medication prescriptions to the pharmacy under supervision of physician. The MA can enter an electronic prescription and send to the provider.

F) Works to assist with medication inventory at the site. This includes injections, medications delivered from the pharmacy, samples, and medications for destruction The MA acts as a designated staff to check medication delivered by a pharmacy for correct packaging and labeling and notifying LVN/RN on site if there is an error. Document delivery, and place in designated storage.

G) Informs the nurse of any discrepancies in inventory.

H) Checks medication for expiration dates in the emergency box and informs the nurse of any if medications are expired or the seal has been broken.

I) Explains treatment procedures to patients - such as labs and EKGs.

J) Performs routine diagnostic and laboratory tests which may include being required to draw and collect blood samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis as well as perform EKGs.

K) Prepares, administers, and records injections according to medical orders and agency guidelines.

L) Informs prescriber of abnormal lab/test results and communicates follow-up information to the patient, such as mailing out lab reports.

M) Assists with clinical and clerical duties, such as front desk, chart room, patient medication call line.

N) Performance standards are performed as applicable with MHMR's We CARE values "We Connect People in Our Community. We Provide Access to Services. We Link People to Resources. We Empower People."

O) Performs other job duties or responsibilities as requested or assigned.

III) Knowledge of Laws, Regulations, Policies/Procedures, Skills, and Abilities

A) Ability to recognize and respect cultural diversity of patients.

B) Serve as the communication liaison between patient and prescriber. Capable of documenting patient communication and clinical treatment accurately and appropriately.

C) Recognize and respond effectively to verbal, nonverbal, and written communication.

D) Ability to follow established policies and procedures dealing with health care.

E) Comply with established risk management and safety procedures.

F) Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and health care team.

G) Must respect the confidential nature of medical information.

H) Working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures.

I) Able to work efficiently and cope with emergency situations.

J) Capable of using experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

K) Good computer skills and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

L) Able to read and interpret documents such as charts or document in the electronic health record if available, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

M) Professional manner and appearance.

N) Emotional and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position.

O) Ability to stand for long periods of time.

P) Strength sufficient to lift some patients, move heavy equipment on wheels (up to approximately 250 lbs.), and to move patients in wheelchairs and stretchers.

Q) Completing Relias or online/other training requirements by due date.

IV) Internal & External Customer Service

A) All participating pharmacies, Health Care Providers in the Community, Trinity Springs Pavilion, John Peter Smith Hospital, Various private hospitals in the community, Public Health Clinics.

V) Travel

A) Adhere to MHMR Mileage and Travel reimbursement policy and any other aspect regarding travel.

VI) Equipment Used

A) Utilized as required for position.

VIII) Agency Requirements

A) All staff are required to participate in agency Emergency Preparedness and Environmental Safety programs and may be assigned by their department as a key/essential staff level function during critical events or for the purpose of sustaining business continuity.

B) This position may require temporary or permanent re-assignment to any MHMR Tarrant facility as determined by program needs and/or the Division/Director.

C) Assigned work hours may change as the needs of the agency change.

D) The Functional Title of this position may change as the needs of the agency change.

E) All work will be completed within the scheduled work hours. All non-exempt (hourly) employees are expected to clock in and clock out for each work shift, no work should be done off the clock.

F) MHMR reserves the right to change, add to or eliminate positions as it deems appropriate.

G) Employment is at will, as well as agency needs may change.

H) Agency dress code is to be followed at all times.

I) Physical on-site presence, including regular attendance and punctuality, is an essential function of this position. Any changes or adjustments to your assigned work schedule or shift hours must be approved by your supervisor in advance.
