Part-Time Evening Nurse

St. Paul's is seeking a registered nurse in our health center. This is an academic-year, non-exempt staff position working two evening shifts per week:
Evening shift (2:15 pm to 11:15 pm) and attendance of 2 hour staff meeting monthly.
Summers and school holidays off.
The registered nurse provides quality nursing care to St. Paul's School students in both an outpatient and inpatient setting. This includes but is not limited to: conducting physical assessments, triage of students for scheduled appointments and walk-in appointments, communicating with parents, documenting in an electronic medical record, working collaboratively with the medical director, nurse practitioner and counselors, assisting the physician or nurse practitioner during consultations when appropriate, implementing nursing protocols and other medical/nursing orders for the treatment and care of students, preoperative and postoperative care, collecting specimens for diagnostic exams, provide health education, vaccine administration, and medication administration. Safe medication handling and storage are also an important aspect of this position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Outpatient Department
- Perform skilled nursing assessments and procedures as necessary in a safe, competent and efficient manner. This will include the collection of specimens following universal precautions which may include random urine or hair drug and alcohol testing, administration of breathalyzer test, obtaining blood samples, performing throat cultures or strep screens, blood glucose and urine pregnancy tests. Proficiency in phlebotomy skill with which we can assist will be expected within a year of hire. Candidate must meet all nursing proficiencies. In addition, the nurse will be able to administer immunizations as mandated and/or recommended per state guidelines or as ordered by the medical director. Analyze the assessment and triage data to facilitate and develop a plan of care. Documentation of such activity will be done in the electronic medical records and as stated per nursing protocol.
- Administer medications per Clark House protocol and document as such in the Medication Administration Record. Discuss medication administration, possible side effects and benefits to students following Clark House policies. Call, fax or electronically send student prescription to pharmacy and record their delivery in a log book. Dispense medication to student as outlined by school medication policy.
- Execute appropriate medical interventions per established Clark House Policies, nursing protocol or physician orders.
- Identify the need to collaborate with the physician, counselors, Athletic Trainers, nutritionist or other health care providers to best meet the needs of the students.
- Communicate openly and effectively with parents/guardians regarding their child's health related issues. This includes insuring that there is communications with parents/guardians when a student spends the night at Clark House for medical or mental health reasons. Document all phone calls with parents or outside professionals.
- Use effective verbal and written communication skills with students, co-workers, parents/guardians and community members. Collaborate with co-workers, school professionals and parents/guardians to meet the health, academic and developmental needs of students.
- Maintain appropriate and healthy boundaries with students while allowing students to access safe and private care.
- Maintain all licensing qualifications and annual St. Paul's School requirements.
- Set up and maintain exam rooms
- Orient and supervise the LNA involved in appropriate health treatment services.
- Arrange appointments for outside evaluations and keep staff and parents informed of progress.
- Conduct daily narcotic count.
- Arrange necessary communications and reminders to students for medical treatments and follow-up care.
- At change of shift, give appropriate nursing reports in an efficient manner regarding activities of the day, necessary follow up on students and important health related matters. This will take no more than 30 minutes unless unusual circumstances.
- Receive patient with assessment and nursing report in an effective and efficient manner.
- Admit student to room following nursing protocols. Formulate a nursing opinion and plan. Consult with physician or nurse practitioner if assistance is needed at that time.
- Implement nursing protocols signed by physician or nurse practitioner whenever applicable. Implement nursing plan. Document in EMR detailed evaluation, assessment plan, and progress notes.
- Check each student's condition and regularly monitor the status of all inpatient students. Take blood pressure and vital signs when indicated. Give medicines as scheduled.
- Assist with room turnover and kitchen duties as needed.
- Perform other specific duties as outlined in the Nurses' Guide to Policies and Procedures.
- In situations where the safety of a student is in question, contact the medical director or nurse practitioner and appropriate counselor for assistance.
- Other inpatient and outpatient duties will be outlined in more detail during the interview process.
Education, Training, and Experience: Must have graduated from an accredited nursing program. Experience with adolescents or school nursing is a plus.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must be currently licensed as a Registered Nurse (R.N.) in the state of New Hampshire and have current CPR certification.
Supervisory Responsibilities: LNA
Language Skills: Good oral and written communication skills.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Skills: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
