DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Prepare and evaluate outpatients preoperatively in an efficient and caring manner to provide for a smooth patient flow throughout their experience. Collects, assesses, and analyzes patient data using nursing diagnoses to develop plan of care.
  • Responsible for obtaining appropriate lab specimens, performing and interpreting EKGs, and IV access according to perioperative requirements.
  • Maintains knowledge of equipment and stays abreast of current perioperative nursing trends.
  • Review outpatient charts immediately preoperatively to ensure completeness, including completion of all preoperative consents.
  • Communicate effectively and appropriately with staff, physicians, patients, families and other health care team members.
  • Conduct pre-surgical assessment.
  • Provides a safe environment for patient and staff by implementing standards of aseptic technique and by controlling the physical and psychological aspects of that environment.
  • Provides airway management.
  • Ongoing physiological assessment through all phases of the surgical experience, including medication and pain management.
  • Participates in the performance improvement process. Assists with regulatory compliance throughout the organization.
  • Demonstrates competence in specified computer applications.
  • Adheres to all Joint Commission Ambulatory Standards and CMS Rules and Regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned by respective Nurse Manager, including staff cross training.
  • Participate in maintenance of unit resource materials.
Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • R.N. with license to practice in State of Iowa.
  • Mandatory reporting course within previous 5 years.
  • IV skills.
  • Knowledge of perioperative services and patient education.
  • Maintains BLS certification.
  • Maintains ACLS certification, or obtains within 6 months of hire.
  • ARD RN - PALS certification strongly encouraged but not required.
