Position Summary

To perform the ophthalmic measurement tests. Assist physicians in diagnostic, therapeutic, and corrective procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Qualifications of Intern Technician (as stated above)
  • Perform Humphrey visual field (HVF) and Goldmann visual fields (GVF)
  • Knowledge of ophthalmic terminology
  • Perform tonometry, visual acuity, pachymetry, and lensometry
  • Take the patient's medical and ocular history
  • Perform keratometry, color vision testing, and stereo testing
  • Information on contact lens insertion and removal (teaching the patient)
  • Apply eye drops and knowledge of ophthalmic medication
  • Basic knowledge of refraction and ability to measure glasses for the patient
  • Basic knowledge of ophthalmic instruments for minor procedures
  • Prepare minor procedure setup, consent a patient for procedure
  • Autorefraction and autokeratometry
  • Learn how to administer and interpret an Amsler Grid test
  • Expert knowledge of Refraction and Retinoscopy
  • Perform Fundus photos, OCT, HRT, IV Fluorescein Angiogram
  • Knowledge of IOL Master Calibration
  • Perform corneal topography
  • Operates, calibrates, and maintains ophthalmic instruments and equipment
  • Make independent decisions based on different patient cases
  • Qualify for clinical study certification
  • All technicians will be involved in learning and teaching in the department.
Minimum Qualifications

Education
  • High school diploma or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Licensure
  • COA (Certified Ophthalmic Assistant) must be obtained within one year of hire; preferred by start date.
Experience
  • A minimum of 1 year of Ophthalmic Tech experience
Physical Requirements
  • Walk, stand, and reach outward on a constant basis in a clinical setting.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull over 100 lbs. as part of the role.
  • Regularly exposed to healthcare settings that may require personal protective equipment.
  • Requires manual dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, calculator, copier machine, and other equipment.
