Primary Purpose

Provide special populations students with behavior modification or management experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify behavior plans and prepare, as requested, social skills or behavior-related lessons and other instructional materials. Provide ongoing counseling and monitoring of students designated to the caseload. Deliver Counseling as a Related Service as defined in the IEP.

Qualifications

Education/Certification

Special Population Counselor

  • Bachelor's degree from accredited university
  • Master's Degree in counseling from accredited university
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate in any content field or a valid license as a counselor; L.P.C. desired but not required
  • Valid Texas school counseling or special education counseling certificate
Special Knowledge/Skills
  • Knowledge of behavioral needs of students in assigned area
  • Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation
  • Knowledge and experience of Crisis Prevention and Intervention, including the proper use of restraint.
  • Knowledge and experience in individual and group counseling of children/adolescents
Experience
  • Three years teaching experience desired but not required
Major Responsibilities and Duties

Instructional Management
  • Write, present, evaluate, and modify behavior modification/management plans while providing recommendations, information, support and assistance to involved teachers, administrators, parents, and students
  • Design and/or provide expertise to professionals who are implementing behavior modification/management plans as required to elicit or extinguish student behaviors.
  • Participate in the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) committee process for all students identified as emotionally disturbed or others as requested by the campus administrator.
  • Contribute pertinent information to the review and dismissal meetings.
  • Monitor and evaluate the relevance and effectiveness of current intervention techniques/practices and make recommendations where appropriate.
  • Provide individual and/or group therapy to eligible or assigned students, including behavior classes and DAEP.
  • Be available to school administrators/staff for consultation services and/or active participation related to the implementation or design of student behavior management plans.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of knowledge, understanding, expertise, and skill with respect to the mental health and emotional well-being of children/adolescents.
  • Respond immediately with therapeutic intervention and assistance when a crisis situation is in progress on any WISD campus.
  • Interact effectively as an integral member of the Crisis Intervention and Prevent teams and be proactive in ensuring the transfer of relevant information and knowledge to other members.
  • Provide training in crisis intervention and prevention, including the proper procedures for restraint.
  • Assist with all populations with behavior management plans, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Assist the school psychologist (LSSP) in assessments, as deemed necessary.
  • Present information to teachers and students regarding people with disabilities. This information will be designed to teach students to understand physical, emotional, mental, and behavior differences among their peers.
Communication
  • Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
  • Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special populations teachers.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Maintain certification as a trainer for Crisis Prevention Intervention and provide CPI training to staff in the district requiring the training.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
