SeKON is seeking a Security Engineer to join our innovative and dynamic team, supporting the operational security of IT systems for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), specifically the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) in Rockville, MD. In this role, you will play a critical part in managing and enhancing the security of both hardware and software environments, ensuring smooth operation and compliance. Additionally, you will provide hands-on support for basic network services and oversee a team of help desk specialists. Working independently or under the guidance of System Engineers or the COR, you will help ensure the seamless functionality of desktops, laptops, mobile devices, and other essential IT equipment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Security Operations & Monitoring: Monitor network activity and detect potential security threats to maintain a secure IT environment.
  • Incident Response: Lead or assist in incident detection, analysis, and response, ensuring timely mitigation and documentation of security events.
  • System Hardening: Implement security configurations and patches to protect against vulnerabilities in hardware and software systems.
  • Compliance Management: Ensure compliance with security frameworks and standards outlined in the SOW, as well as regulatory and organizational policies.
  • Network Security: Configure and manage firewalls, intrusion detection systems (IDS), and intrusion prevention systems (IPS) to safeguard the network.
  • Vulnerability Management: Conduct security assessments, vulnerability scanning, and penetration testing to identify and mitigate risks.
  • Digital Forensics: Perform forensic investigations as needed, using tools such as EnCase, to analyze cyber incidents.
  • Collaboration & Reporting: Work with System Engineers, ISSO, and COR to align operational security tasks with the overall IT strategy. Prepare and present security reports to leadership.
  • Security Tools & Technology Management: Manage and maintain security tools and systems, ensuring they are up to date and optimized for performance.
  • End-User Awareness: Provide security awareness training to employees to promote the best practices for safeguarding information.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 6+ years of relevant experience in IT operational security roles.
  • One or more of the following certifications:
  • Enterasys Certified Expert (ECE) - Network Security
  • Enterasys Certified Expert (ECE) - Security Information Management
  • IBM Certified Associate - Rational AppScan Source Edition
  • Security+ Certified Systems Engineer
  • GIAC Security Essentials (GSEC) - SANS Institute
  • GIAC Certified Incident Handler (GCIH) - SANS Institute
  • EnCase Digital Forensics Certification
  • CISSP - Certified Information Systems Security Professional (ISC)²
  • SSCP - Systems Security Certified Practitioner (ISC)²
  • GIAC Security Expert (GSE) - SANS Institute
  • Security Certified Network Architect (SCP)
  • Security Certified Network Professional (SCP)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working within federal government environments or supporting compliance frameworks like NIST or FISMA.
  • Familiarity with cloud security solutions and virtualized environments.
  • Knowledge of network protocols, firewalls, and intrusion detection systems.
  • Strong understanding of risk management frameworks and security assessments.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
