SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Under the general supervision of the Library Director, oversees all aspects of library services to children, young adults, and families; provides reference and reader's advisory to patrons of all ages; maintains knowledge of youth services including children's literature and young adult literature; develops appropriate collection of library materials for children and young adults; assists with collection development in assigned area(s), creates promotional materials for children's and young adult events; plans and coordinates programs/events for children and young adults; performs public service and other library duties as needed. performs public service and other library duties as needed.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Essential Duties*
  • Responsible for management of children and young adult services which includes, but is not limited to, planning, coordinating and implementing children's and young adult programs for a diverse multicultural population; maintaining a positive presence in the community by providing outreach services; coordinating publicity about children's and young adult library programs and services; soliciting funds for programs through budget requests, grants and gifts from library support groups and community organizations; and monitoring expenditures of program funds;
  • Supervises children's librarian, youth services assistant and interns which includes, but is not limited to, setting work schedules; approving vacation and sick leave requests; submitting payroll to Human Resources; conducting performance evaluations; and making recommendations on hiring, promoting and discipline of employees;
  • Develops and maintains the juvenile and young adult print and multimedia collections and electronic resources which includes, but is not limited to, evaluating existing collections and online services, analyzing community needs, assessing vendors, purchasing appropriate materials and electronic resources; preparing budget requests for assigned areas of the collection; monitoring expenditures of collection development funds; and complying with purchasing policies;
  • Assists in formulating library goals and objectives for services to children and young adults; collaborates on updates to the children and teen sections of the library web page; and promotes library programs and events using social media;
  • Responsible for the completion of daily supervisory operations which include, but are not limited to, opening and closing the library, processing daily reserve and overdue reports, reconciling money drawers, preparing daily revenue reports, revising daily desk schedule, issuing electronic library cards and billing customer accounts.
Other Important Duties:
  • Required to work varied shifts which include weekends and evenings.
  • Performs general circulation duties and collects payment for library services and fees using the Point of Sale (POS) system.
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned; and
  • Observes all safety rules and procedures.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
  • Master's Degree in Library and Information Science, Library and Information Studies/Science, or Information Studies/Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program with coursework in children's literature or young adult literature, and/or services to children or young adults.
  • Proficiency in graphic design and graphic design software applications. Library experience preferred. Bilingual preferred.
  • Two years supervisory experience.
  • Experience working in a public library setting.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid Texas Driver's License.
