Purpose Statement
The job of Occupational Therapist is done for the purpose/s of providing appropriate educational programs and services for students with disabilities; evaluating physical, emotional and learning disabilities; and meeting with stakeholders to facilitate occupational therapy goals, including functional skills necessary for student success in a school setting.

This job reports to Director of Student Special Services and Building Principals

Essential Functions
  • Administers occupational therapy procedures and modalities for the purpose of achieving program objectives which may differ site to site under the district's "school choice" model in support of established local protocols.
  • Assesses students' fine motor skills and functional abilities (e.g. perceptual-motor, hand functions, motor coordination, sensory development, muscle strength, etc.) for the purpose of determining program eligibility and developing recommendations for treatment, appropriate assistive devices and/or school placement.
  • Collaborates with a variety of groups and/or individuals (e.g. parents, teachers, physicians, administration, maintenance personnel, multidisciplinary team members, other professionals, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information, resolving issues and providing services in compliance with established guidelines.
  • Completes screening, observation, and formal/informal assessment for the purpose of determining need for educationally relevant OT program based on functional needs, as wells as treatment planning and IEP goals.
  • Consults with teachers, parents, other personnel and/or outside professionals for the purpose of providing requested information, developing plans for services, making recommendations and/or coordinating occupational therapy services with those of other disciplines.
  • Develops and implement direct, indirect, and consultative services for the purpose of ensuring that individual planned intervention goals are met.
  • Develops treatment plans, interventions and/or educational materials for the purpose of remediating students' educationally relevant functional skill deficits, (e.g. sensory, fine motor, visual motor, etc.) and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Directs the work of assigned education support specialists (e.g. non-district agency staff, occupational therapy assistants, interns, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring objectives are followed and achieved.
  • Identifies structural issues for the purpose of removing barriers for students with physical limitations and/or identifying appropriate assistive technology, adaptive equipment, and/or adaptive programming.
  • Instructs students, staff, and parents/guardians for the purpose of providing information on medical/behavioral attributes, use of assistive devices and/or implementing plans for remediation of functional limitations.
  • Interprets medical reports for the purpose of providing information and/or ensuring appropriate, safe, treatment/intervention plans.
  • Maintains student files, evaluations and records (e.g. progress reports, activity logs, treatment plans, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of information as required for reference and/or compliance.
  • Observes students physical and/or motor disabilities (e.g. interpret assessment results, plan intervention services, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring support for student in accordance with the educational goals.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars (e.g. training, IEPs, multidisciplinary team meetings, professional development, etc.) for the purpose of planning, conveying and/or gathering information for the creations of educationally relevant goals and objectives for students with occupational therapy needs.
  • Performs site visits (e.g. multiple work sites; home visits as assigned, etc.) for the purpose of providing direct and indirect therapy interventions and assistance as required by district, state and federal regulations.
  • Prepares a wide variety of written documents (e.g. pre and post-student evaluations, activity logs, correspondence, memos, treatment plans, progress notes, reports, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, education plans, providing written reference, and/or conveying information in support of students, parents/guardians, and district guidelines.
  • Provides direct occupational therapy services (e.g. fine motor, visual motor, sensory, tactile, kinesthetic, cognitive, executive function, perceptual-motor integration, feeding, dressing, grooming, personal hygiene, etc.) for the purpose of developing students daily living skills in compliance with established goals and objectives.
  • Researches resources and methods (e.g. intervention and treatment techniques, assessment tools and methods, community resources, etc.) for the purpose of determining the appropriate approach for addressing students' functional goals.
  • Responds to inquiries (e.g. parents, teachers, staff, students, community programs, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or referral as appropriate in support of student educational goals.
  • Transports or plans transport of supplies and equipment to a variety of sites for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items as needed.
