About the Job - Your Role

The purpose of this position is to provide professional dental hygiene services to the adults in custody (AIC) in a correctional setting within institutions.

In this position, you will perform professional chairside dental hygiene procedures, consistent with community standards. Adhere to established time frames for procedures. Proficiency is required in all aspects of dental hygiene.

Direct patient care duties include:
  • Record health histories
  • Take and record blood pressure and vital signs
  • Perform head and neck exam
  • Oral inspection and measuring of periodontal pockets, localized, and comprehensive
  • Patient education in oral hygiene
  • Take intra-oral and extra-oral radiographs and photographs
  • Give pre-operative and post-operative instructions
  • Administer fluoride treatments
  • Deliver oral antibiotic prophylaxis as prescribed by a dentist
  • Apply topical anesthetic agents
  • Administer local anesthetic agents
  • Polish and smooth restorations
  • Perform oral prophylaxis and removal of deposits and stains from the surfaces of teeth
  • Perform deep cleanings (Scaling and Root planning)
  • Perform soft tissue curettage
  • Place and remove perio dressings
  • Sterilize equipment and disinfect operatories
  • Fabricate and deliver fluoride trays
  • Pack and medicate extraction areas
  • Place approved medications (antimicrobials) prescribed by the dentist under the gingiva
  • Remove sutures
  • Document encounters and treatment plans in the patient's medical record
This position is represented by American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). This position may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by statute.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a dental license as a dental hygienist issued by the Oregon Board of Dentistry at the time of appointment and maintained throughout employment.

Additional Required Qualifications
  • Current Oregon licensure for the Professional Practice of Dental Hygiene
    • Expanded practice permit preferred but not mandatory
  • Radiologic Proficiency Endorsement and Local Anesthesia
  • Must satisfy all Oregon Board of Dentistry continuing education requirements
  • Oregon Driver's License
  • Current CPR - Advanced LBAS for health care workers

Supervision and control of adults in custody in an inherent responsibility. Frequently works alone with little or no direct supervision. Sitting for extended periods of time. May require travel to various institutions within the state. A valid driver's license and a good driving record or be able to provide an acceptable alternative method of transportation.

It advises and evaluates counties regarding administration of probation and parole programs supervising more than 24,000 offenders in Oregon communities. The successful candidate for this position must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility.
