Job Description: Endoscopy Registered Nurse
Supervised By: Endoscopy Director
General Responsibilities: Under the guidance of the registered nurse license, supervision of the physician, and in collaboration with other team members, the endoscopy RN is responsible for the delivery of direct and indirect care in all stages of the patient's procedure plan during their stay at the endoscopy center in accordance with the nurse practice act, professional standards of care, state of Idaho, AAAHC accreditation standards and Idaho Gastroenterology's philosophy, policies and procedures.
Pre-Procedure/Recovery RN Responsibilities:
- Assess, evaluate, and accurately record the patient's pre-procedure and post-procedure phases and all necessary patient care tasks involved in each of those phases
- Initiate emergency measures when necessary
- Communicate pertinent information to co-workers and report errors in a timely manner to the Endoscopy Director
- Accountable for administration of drugs, IV procedures, and other therapeutic measures in a safe and accurate manner and in accordance with physician's orders.
- Provide a safe environment for the patient to prevent potential injury. Investigates and intervenes in problem situations, reporting appropriate information to the supervisor and documents the same
- Anticipate and assist with maintaining an adequate inventory of supplies and medications.
- Provide patient teaching in all phases of their care (admission, procedure, and recovery) review discharge instructions with the patient, and then document the patient's understanding in the EMR record
- Provide guidance to other staff members assisting with orientation
- Consult with the appropriate supervisor or physicians as needed
- Assist in crash cart maintenance and defibrillator checks, monitoring expiration dates and recalls
- Complete patient documentation in a clear, concise, and timely manner using the
- Demonstrate ability to re-process scopes and troubleshoot issues. Maintains familiarity with function of scope and cleaning room
- Seek educational opportunities and accept responsibility for professional growth and development. Participate in in-service opportunities and staff meetings.
- Accept direction from supervisor and/or physicians and adhere to established procedures and policies

- Maintain flexibility with assignments; able to work at all IGA endoscopy locations when needed
- Function within the legal limits of the Nurse Practice Act
- Participate in the QI program as needed
- Complete yearly competency modules in Conscious Sedation, Cardiac Monitoring, Blood Glucose, Infection Control and Scope Room
- Maintain computer skills required to function in EPIC
- Utilizes Microsoft Outlook email for non-patient correspondence and EPIC
- Demonstrate respect for IGA policies for security, privacy, and confidentiality while
- Immediately report any network, hardware, or software malfunction to the IT Officer
- Assume the role of charge nurse when assigned
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Evaluate and complete assessment of patient needs to provide supportive care before, during, and after procedures and maintain accurate and complete medical records for the patient's electronic chart
- Maintains equipment and supplies to include
- Clean and disinfect endoscopy equipment
- Operate and troubleshoot patient monitoring equipment
- Anticipate and assist with maintaining an adequate inventory of supplies and medications
- Ensure informed consent is signed by patient, MD, and witnessed by RN prior to administration of sedation
- Assist in accurate completion of procedure logbook
- The endoscopy RN will administer sedative, hypnotic, or analgesic drugs, at the direction of the physician

- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
- Current Idaho State license to practice as a Registered Nurse
- Experience in ambulatory surgery or endoscopy preferred
- Membership in Gastroenterology or endoscopy specialty or other local, state, or national professional societies encouraged
- Maintains BLS and ACLS certifications and re-certification as required
- Completion of cardiac and sedation module within the probationary period and annually
- Competency for sedation is completed upon hire and every three years
- Physical requirements include the ability to lift items up to 50 lbs., able to tolerate normal sitting, pulling/pushing, kneeling, stooping, bending, reaching, talking, and hearing. Must be able to tolerate standing for long periods of time. Must be able to respond to a medical emergency within 2 minutes.
