Description

The Accessibility Coordinator provides disability accommodations in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The Accessibility Coordinator works collaboratively within Accessibility Services and the Division of Online and Distance Education to facilitate access for online students with documented disabilities and provide support to online students in accordance with the mission of Accessibility Services. The Accessibility Coordinator engages with students to conduct intake meetings, coordinate reasonable accommodations, and provide ongoing academic success coaching.
Examples of Duties

The Accessibility Coordinator provides disability accommodations to support online learners requesting accessibility support, coaching, and guidance. The Coordinator engages individually and interactively with students to gather information, assess accessibility requests, provide assistance and referrals for usage of assistive technology and other disability resources, and engages with students in an ongoing manner through academic success coaching.

Supervisory Organization:
The position reports primarily to the Director of Accessibility Services with additional "dotted line" leadership to the Director of Online and Distance Education.

Direct Student Advocacy and Support
  • Engages with students to establish eligibility for Accessibility Services, consults with Director of Accessibility Services to determine reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities, and communicates approved accommodations and additional supports available for students.
  • Provides specialized accessibility support to students requiring alternate format texts and adaptive assistive technology for accessing course content.
  • Coach students through the accommodations request process and the accommodations renewal process.
  • Provide ongoing academic success coaching to students addressing the unique challenges and strengths associated with neurodiversity. Areas to address through coaching may include transition to college, learning strategies, self-advocacy, self-efficacy, time management, social support, and communication.
  • Maintains confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and departmental policy.
Office and Team Support
  • Reviews documentation assessing functional limitations of disabilities and identifies appropriate accommodations, supportive resources, and provides outside referrals, consulting with the Director of Accessibility Services on complex requests.
  • Maintains careful and organized record-keeping including maintenance of meeting notes, databases, and student records.
  • Work alongside the Director of Accessibility Services, the Success Coach for Accessibility and Online Division staff to continue growing awareness of student needs through educational opportunities and promoting the work of Accessibility Services and the Online Division.
Typical Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Required level:
  • Bachelor's degree in special education, psychology, rehabilitation counseling, or another related field, and at least one year experience working with college students, students with disabilities, or adults with disabilities. The candidate should be familiar with the ADA, Section 504, and possess an understanding of the needs of college students with disabilities, neurodiverse students, and a basis of reasonable accommodations.
Preferred Level:
  • Master's degree in special education, psychology, rehabilitation counseling, or another related field; Three or more years of progressively responsible experience in accessibility/disability support services, academic advising, or teaching in a higher educational context; a demonstrated history of establishing positive relationships with and advocating for students with disabilities in an academic setting.
