General Job Description:

The school health assistant assists the public education department licensed school registered nurse with the implementation of the school health program, by providing delegated nursing services in the health room, including but not limited to, health screening, assisting with the administration of medications, basic first aid procedures, maintenance of student health records, maintenance of a clean and orderly health room. The school health assistant may also perform nursing tasks as appropriately delegated by the public education licensed registered nurse for the care of individual students with special needs, including diapering, range of motion exercises, and feeding assistance.

Work Schedule:

Contract Hours: 7.5 or as per contract

Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or equivalency.
  2. First aid, CPR, bloodborne pathogen training, child abuse reporting training, and any training deemed necessary by supervisors, preferred or obtained within six months of employment.
  3. Computer literate with demonstrated skills in word processing, database, and spreadsheets.
  4. Health Assistant Licensure with the NM Public Education Department at Level I, must also complete a NM Department of Health training for school health assistants.
  5. If previously worked as a School Health Assistant, employee must provide verification by school administrator that a Health Assistant orientation was given and was successfully completed.
  6. Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
Physical Requirements:

Sitting - frequent (deskwork/computer for prolonged periods)

Walking - frequent (buildings, fields)

Lifting - occasionally (supplies, equipment, children) 50-75 lbs.

Motion Requirements: BACK/TRUNK-flexion, rotation

Other Work Activities:

Performance Responsibilities:
  1. All activities of the health assistant are under the direction and supervision of a licensed Public Education licensed registered nurse and the district nursing supervisor and per the New Mexico Nurse Practice Act .
  2. Performs health office assignments with precedence over other tasks or activities.
  3. Administer minor first aid to the sick and injured as trained and directed by the nurse and according to the School Health Manual Emergency Guidelines.
  4. Provides personal hygiene assistance to students.
  5. Contacts the public education department nurse or parent/caregiver for direction in case of illness or injury other than minor first aid, if the nurse cannot be reached.
  6. Administers CPR when necessary. Activates Emergency Medical Services if necessary.
  7. Assists and conducts with routine vision, hearing, height weight or other nurse directed screenings at any district school site.
  8. Performs and records screening results on student records as designated by the nurse.
  9. Notifies the nurse of screening failures according to directions and guidelines of the nurse.
  10. Maintains and uses computer skills of word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
  11. Assists to collect, maintain, distribute, and review health information data as requested by the school nurse and supervisor.
  12. Reviews immunization records to determine compliance with NMDOH requirements and assists the nurse to notify parents/guardian of school requirements through procedures directed by the nursing staff.
  13. Documents student and staff visits to the health office as directed by the nurse and supervisor.
  14. Maintains, prepares, and sends required and requested health office reports and medical orders in collaboration and after review with the school site nurse.
  15. Maintains timely regular communications with the nurse on all aspects of the health room.
  16. Reports supervisor and nurse directed specific type of student/staff incidents and health office visits to a nurse and/or supervisor in a prompt manner.
  17. Consults with a district nurse at any time practice questions or unusual health office situations occur.
  18. Perform the tasks of supervised self-administration of medications or medication administration per district medication policy and in compliance with the New Mexico Nursing Practice Act.
  19. Competently performs student specific delegated nursing procedures, tasks, and treatments as directed by the nurse.
  20. Maintains sanitary conditions of the health room utilizing principles of universal precautions.
  21. Maintains a professionally organized health office and facilitates student and staff privacy necessary for professional and confidential services.
  22. Maintains strict confidentiality of information regarding students, families, and staff.
  23. Shares the responsibility for the care of district inventory, as well as the proper and safe use of facilities, equipment, and supplies, reporting safety hazards promptly.
  24. Displays a desire to work with students and responds to students as individuals in developmentally appropriate ways and serves as a healthy role model.
  25. Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills (written, oral, electronic) with diverse populations, including students, parents, educational staff, health office staff and supervisor.
  26. Receives training and performs delegated activities as assigned by the PED Registered Nurse following the guidelines of delegation of nursing tasks to unlicensed assistive personnel.
  27. Provides for nursing services coverage in the event of absence through notification of absences to Nurse, Coordinator, and Principal.
  28. Maintains competency through training and in-service as directed or authorized by the Nursing Coordinator based on district or student population needs.
