Basic Function
***NOTE: This is a temporary, part-time position with variable hours and no benefits.***
This is a temporary employee position that reports to the Aquatics Coordinator. Primary duties include: teaching all ages and all levels of the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program, assisting other instructors with their classes, teaching and supervising instructor aides, educating the public on habits and attitudes that lead to safe aquatic recreation. Candidates should be able to show knowledge of swimming skills, classroom management, organization of materials; ability to make and follow block and lesson plans. Instructors may be required to work special events, evenings, weekends and split shifts at any City of Federal Way Recreation Division location. Individuals must be mature, trustworthy and able to work independently. The employee is subject to an annual evaluation and must be able to accept constructive feedback. A background check is a condition of employment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct classes in a safe and professional manner.
Communicate clearly and effectively with students of all ages.
Provide motivational and corrective feedback.
Plan and organize courses, including the use of block and lesson plans.
Arrive and be ready to work on time.
Be physically, mentally and emotionally ready to teach.
Ensure participants' safety during class time.
Report any unsafe situations or conditions to supervisor.
Report any damage to the facility or equipment, incidents and injuries using appropriate forms in an accurate and timely manner.
Communicate any pertinent concerns or problems regarding courses or students to supervisor.
Enforce the rules and policies of City of Federal Way Recreation Division, and educate participants as to the rules and policies.
Respond to emergency situations and be able to implement appropriate Emergency Action Plans.
Work positively with the facility staff to provide a safe place for the public.
Assist other instructors.
Assist in training Water Safety Instructor Aides.
Adhere to blood borne pathogen training and safety standards.
Attend scheduled staff trainings.
Provide quality customer service for the patrons and staff.
Complete other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
Qualifications:
- Desired, but not required: ARC Water Safety Instructor, Lifeguard Training, CPR-FPR, Community First Aid and Blood Borne Pathogen.
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Work effectively and communicate with the public and co-workers in both written and oral forms.
- Follow written and oral instructions.
- Possess knowledge of aquatic programs and safety procedures.
Ability to:
- Perform strenuous activity.
- Perform duties involving physical labor, such as bending, kneeling, standing, reaching, lifting, climbing, stooping, squatting, pushing, twisting and swimming.
- Maintain 20/40 vision; use of corrective lens is acceptable.
- Assist during emergency situations.
- Lift 50 pounds.
- Swim at a minimum of the American Red Cross Youth 5 skill level.
This position is not eligible for benefits.
