Position Overview

The Detox Tech reports to the Program Director.

The Detox Tech does not supervise.

This position requires working during the nocturnal shift, meaning your work hours will be scheduled overnight, typically between 11 PM and 7 AM

The detox tech provides detox services per the social model detox residential program and DHCS standards and regulations.

The tech does not prescribe or administer medications.

Duties
  • Documentation of progress of resident
  • Collecting resident data in a timeline manner
  • Coordinate with other disciplines to provide the highest level of care.
  • Attends treatment team and staff meetings.
  • Manages resident appointments.
  • Referrals, evaluations, and detox checks/observations
  • Detox checks are logged, at a minimum, every 30 minutes, or less, for the first 72 hours or if symptoms warrant the need to do them longer.
  • Checks are physical and face-to-face and check breathing.
  • Facility room searches daily.
  • Urine analysis and breathalyzer testing
  • Observes medication self-administration for residents in accordance with company and DHCS laws and regulations.
  • Logs medications, changes, and resident observations of self-administration
  • May transport residents to appointments, meetings, outings, etc.
  • Responsible for Infection, Prevention, and Control related tasks
  • Takes blood pressure readings.
  • Other duties as assigned.
The detox tech maintains resident Electronic Health Records (EHR) documents in the resident file per the APA ethical codes, organization policies, state and federal regulations, and The Joint Commission standards.

Competencies and Abilities
  • Identify symptoms of alcohol and drug abuse and withdrawal (PAWS)
  • Gather, interpret, report, and use information to support resident detox.
  • Determine when a referral is needed and determine how to coordinate care.
  • Collaborate in creation of treatment plans and recommendations.
  • Perform screenings and assessments regarding alcohol and drugs.
  • Perform detox checks minimally every 30 minutes of less for the first 72-hours face-to-face and check for breathing.
  • Log detox checks appropriately and assessing resident for safety.
  • Abide by ethical codes of the APA and CCAPP
Requirements

Minimum one-year experience working with dual diagnosis, substance abuse, chemical dependency, psychiatric, detox and/or medical surgical fields.
  • Must be registered, licensed, or certified. (Must enroll in a RADT course and complete it within the first 3 days; we cover the cost of enrolling in the 9-hour online course and the exam).
  • Two years clean and sober if in recovery
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification on file (Must enroll in an approved CPR/BLS course and complete it within the first 30 days; we cover the cost of enrolling in the course and the exam).
  • Current TB skin test and health screen report
Knowledge
  • Twelve Step Recovery Program
  • Social Model detox
  • Community resources and referral techniques
  • Urine Analysis testing and breathalyzer
  • Working with addiction and dual diagnosis
  • Working with medical professionals in the community


Knowledge shall include the signs and symptoms of alcohol and other drug intoxication and withdrawal, as well as the appropriate treatment and monitoring of these conditions and how to facilitate the resident's entry into ongoing care. The handling of medical consultations and referrals shall be a necessity for emergencies.
