Job Description

This position will be responsible for dual duties as an Adult Criminal Diversion Case Manager and Care and Treatment Legal Support.

Essential Duties for Criminal Diversion Case Manager

  • Provides caseload supervision of diversion defendants charged with misdemeanors and felonies; identifies risks and needs; utilizes communications strategies which supports adherence to the diversion contract; makes referrals to community-based programs for counseling, education, substance abuse treatment, mental health treatment; and other needed programming.
  • Interviews defendants to determine eligibility to enter the diversion program and make recommendations based on prior criminal history, and other factors. Evaluates and monitors defendants' compliance, performance, and progress; holds defendants accountable; monitors violations, and extensions; prepares all legal documents related to diversion. Provide guidance and direction to defendants; provides ongoing correspondence as needed with court, attorneys, service providers and community stakeholders.
  • Discusses options including revocations; provides alternative sanctions to revocation; attends revocation hearings, testifies in court. Make recommendations for process improvement; tests new technology and provides feedback; collects and inputs data, case notes, and file information into assigned computer programs; creates, updates, maintains, monitors files; creates reports and provides information to stakeholders. Accurately receipts in monies owed on cases.
Essential Duties for Care and Treatment Legal Support
  • Conducts legal and factual research into care and treatment statutes (probate), cases, and records using a variety of resources: apply information into case filings.
  • Provides administrative assistance for legal proceedings, procures and reviews reports. Composes/generates legal documents to file electronically to the court: this may include but is not limited to petitions to open new cases and orders to update the court record as to court events and findings in existing cases. Prepares calendar entries for hearings, attends hearings in support of assistant district attorney and journalizes court events.
  • Corresponds with outside legal counsel, the court, mental health center and hospital/treatment facility staff to determine patient and/or hearing status. Disseminates filed orders to treatment facilities as required by statute. Meets with care and treatment attorneys as necessary to discuss concerns and issues.
  • Works cooperatively with the court to obtain future settings for cases as appropriate based on court events/findings. Generate various orders, including custody orders, treatment orders, and outpatient documents.

  • Enjoy and excel in a fast-paced environment, as work products are often under strict statutory deadlines.
  • Exceptional attention to detail with task management and organizational skills is required to successfully navigate the necessary flow of documents, communication and calendaring responsibilities.
  • Ability to work on multiple things and effective time management skills.
  • Ability to work on multiple things simultaneously, effectively, and efficiently both independently and collaboratively with colleagues, the court and outside agencies.
  • Liaise with defendants, defense bar, providers of services, and the mental health center staff during all phases of a diversion or care and treatment case. Specifically on care and treatment cases during case referral/initiation through probable cause hearing and during transition of patient to outpatient treatment order.
  • Exhibited ability to take initiative, prioritize and follow through on work assignments.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral and written skills.
  • Strong ability to be flexible in an ever-changing environment.
  • Knowledge of mental health and legal terminology.
Job Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or related field; one (1) year criminal justice or related experience; successfully pass a
    criminal history check; and possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Applicant must submit to and pass a pre-employment, post-offer drug screen prior to employment.
  • Johnson County Government requires reference/background screening for all positions. Specified criteria may vary by Department/Agency.
Preferred Job Requirements:
  • One (1) year case management experience.
