Position Highlights: NT6 Observation

  • Number of beds on unit: 35
  • Patient population: The Observation Unit is a 35-bed unit that provides acute care for issues ranging from cardiac, to general surgery, to behavioral health. Patients' goal length of stay is 24-48 hours.
  • Nurse to Patient ratio: 1:5-6
  • Department culture and resources: The Observation unit is a fast-pace, team-oriented unit. We work closely with our physician partners and ancillary team members to achieve the best outcomes for our patients.
  • Frequent nursing skills/equipment used: Foley/IV/NG insertions, Nursing prioritization, IV pumps, Lift equipment, SCDs, Telemetry monitoring, Patient connection
  • Implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice
  • Completes initial assessment upon patient admission and develops appropriate plan of care
  • Takes responsibility for patient and employee safety
  • Communicates with others directly and in private when necessary to resolve issues
  • Fulfills all requirements of departmental competencies.
  • Assess IV sites every 4 hours
  • Must maintain documentation standards as evidenced by passed quarterly chart audits
  • Must attend 5 out 6 staff meetings per year
  • Identify change in patient status and respond appropriately
