Job Description:

• Maintains the facility's USDA license, NIH Animal Welfare Assurance and AAALAC accreditation by assuring compliance with the Federal Animal Welfare Regulations, the Public Health Service policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and recommendations in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
• Performs veterinary examinations and directs medical treatments as part of standard care, study specific requirements, and veterinary orders.
• Performs and documents a variety of activities, including but not limited to, physical, gait, and neurological examinations; routine veterinary observations; charting of physiological data and animal health status; etc.
• Trains and supervises personnel in concepts such as veterinary care, aseptic surgery, animal welfare and special techniques.
• Performs surgical procedures and participate in projects where surgical/clinical expertise, postmortem examination, diagnostic expertise, and/or veterinary care are required
• Monitors animals' progress in anesthetic recovery and post-operatively on the days following surgery to ensure appropriate healing.
• Advises on the development of new surgical methods to enlarge NAMSA competencies and reputation
• May serve as a member of IACUC
• Shares with after-hours, weekend, and on-call duties.
• Assists with laboratory and technical staff training.
• Serves as principal investigator writing reports and/or as project coordinator, as assigned.
• Develops SOPs, GLP protocols, study plans, and reports as needed.
• Participates in audits/inspections as needed.
• May serve as non-GLP project coordinator as assigned.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Technical Competencies:

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the health of the animals including preventative medicine, treatment and disease control procedures
  • Responsible for the coordination, conduct and aftercare of animals involved in surgical studies in the laboratory.

Qualifications and Skills
  • DVM and a valid state veterinary license.
  • 3 years of related experience or ACLAM board certification.
Technical Competencies
  • Competent in lab animal medicine and surgery
  • Understanding of applicable guidelines and regulations including, but not limited to NIH/PHS, USDA, AAALAC, ISO, GLP, USP, FHSA, Tripartite, and FDA.
  • Working knowledge of scientific applications, experimental design, and data evaluation.


Working Conditions:

• While performing the duties of this job, the Associate is regularly exposed to, and must handle and come in contact with, a variety of livestock, domestic, and laboratory animals, as well as their blood and bodily fluids. The Associate is frequently exposed to sharps, wet conditions (non-weather), and toxic or caustic chemicals. The Associate is occasionally exposed to fluoroscopy, required to work within a Bio-Safety-Level 2 (BSL2) environment, and on rare occasions is exposed to faxitron x-ray imaging. The Associate may occasionally be exposed to gasses such as CO2 and isoflurane, and zoonotic diseases.
• The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and frequently loud. Hearing protection is required in designated areas and when performing specific tasks
• While performing the duties of this job, the Associate is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, and talk or hear. The Associate is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, grasp, hold and manipulate equipment or tools with hands, stoop, crouch, and kneel. The Associate is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, or crawl. The Associate must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds with assistance. The Associate may be required to view computer monitors and stand for extended periods of time.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, the ability to see a full range of colors, the ability to adjust focus, and exceptional spatial acuity and visual-kinesthetic coordination.
