Job Description

Penn National Insurance is looking to add a Data & Business Intelligence Analyst to our incredible IT team This is a hybrid position reporting to the home office in Harrisburg, PA.

The Data and Business Intelligence Analyst position resides in the Information Technology department on the Enterprise Data Warehouse team. This position supports data collection, manipulation, reporting, and analysis in support of the Enterprise Data Warehouse, Advanced Analytics, and other areas within the company.

COMPETENCIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF THE DATA AND BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE ANALYST

Business Acumen
  • Maintains and updates data including extracts, queries, aggregates, and snapshots.
  • Extracts data for ad hoc predictive modeling projects.
  • Identifies and recommends internal and external data to be used for modeling and/or decision making.
  • Provides data and analysis for ad hoc projects as directed.
  • Has practical knowledge of various internal data sources (i.e., policy admin systems, claims systems, IT systems).
  • Is aware of workflows in various departments throughout the organization.
  • Creates and updates or modifies systems documentation including, but not limited to: business or systems requirements, change requests, workbooks, test matrices, test cases on new product development, and report layouts. Documentation is used by programmers/developers to program changes to production systems. (Applies to IT EDW)
  • Develops and delivers system training courses for corporate and service office business clients. (Applies to IT EDW)

  • Supports data needs of Commercial Lines, Personal Lines, Claims, IT, Actuarial, Finance, Statistics, Customer Experience, and Field Operations.

SPECIAL RELATIONSHIPS FOR THE DATA AND BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE ANALYST

Interacts primarily with Advanced Analytics and IT developers and analysts, but also interacts extensively with others requiring data and business intelligence including Commercial Lines, Personal Lines, Claims, Actuarial, Finance, Statistics, Customer Experience, Field Operations, and external data vendors.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE DATA AND BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE ANALYST

Education/Credentials

Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field

Experience
  • Minimum of 2 years professional statistical or analytical experience, preferably within a property and casualty insurance environment
  • Programming skills in structured query language or other data management /analysis applications, such as Microsoft Access, SQL or other database program
  • Experience designing reports for end-users preferred
Technical/Professional Knowledge
  • Working knowledge of the property/casualty insurance industry and operations
  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong time management skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Thorough knowledge of data warehousing and Penn National's Enterprise Data Warehouse
  • Excellent PC skills, with an emphasis on Access, Excel, Pivot Tables, Power Pivot, and SharePoint
  • Familiarity with Data Warehouse concepts (Kimball Star schema Fact and Dimensional data marts, Slowly Changing Dimensions, ETL and BI concepts)
  • Familiarity with database querying language such as MS SQL.
  • Working knowledge of relational databases as well as business object-oriented databases and XML.
