Position Summary: The Surgical Technician assists in surgical procedures under the direction of a Registered Nurse. They contribute to the safe and effective delivery of nursing care while maintaining an understanding of each instrument's function for multiple services. They may provide direct patient care and observe patients, scrub and assist the surgeon in the operating field, assist with surgical room turnover, act as a preceptor, and collaborate with the Registered Nurse in clinical decision making. This position is at a Level I Trauma Hospital and may involve assignments with patients from neonate to geriatric age groups.

Detailed responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with staff to gather necessary equipment and supplies for surgeries
  • Set up tables, instruments, and supplies required for specific operations
  • Assist in preparing and draping patients and the operating area
  • Assist with preparing and maintaining a sterile field for surgical procedures
  • Assist in the maintenance and care of specimens and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis
  • Decontaminate all equipment, instruments, and supplies
  • Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings, and workshops
  • Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures, and protocols; be proactive in identifying and reporting/correcting environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk and report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors, and/or near misses in a timely manner
  • Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may 'not seem right'
  • Obtain supplies and instruments for the surgical case(s) and ensure their sterility; arrange supplies and instruments in case carts according to set procedures while ensuring accuracy and proper documentation
  • Function as a member of the sterile team in donning gown and gloves, creating and maintaining a sterile field, and issuing instruments to surgeons
  • Communicate updates or necessary changes for the surgeon preference card to the appropriate coordinator
  • Assist with maintaining equipment/instruments in proper working order; assist with table equipment, patient positioning, and application of immobilization devices and dressings
  • Verify implants and communicate special requests for procedures
  • Report discrepancies, problems, and concerns to management using proper chain of command

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent; program graduate in Surgical Technology
  • Current CPR for Healthcare/BLS Provision or Professional Rescuers certification within 30 days of hire
  • Certification of Surgical Technologists
  • 1.5 years (18 months) of directly related experience preferred
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish, or other indigenous language, preferred

Physical Conditions: The job includes heavy work and requires exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for medium work.

Working Conditions: The job requires handling hazardous materials, use of personal protective equipment, and may be required to perform on-call duties.
